💊 IS YOUR INSURANCE TELLING YOU WHERE YOU MUST FILL YOUR PRESCRIPTION?
You may have experienced pharmacy steering if your insurance company or PBM tells you:
➡️ “You must use our mail-order pharmacy.”
➡️ “You have to fill this medication at a specific chain.”
➡️ “Your local pharmacy can’t fill it anymore.”
➡️ “You’ll pay more if you don’t use our preferred pharmacy.”
⚖️ Florida patients have protections.
Under Fla. Stat. §626.8825(2)(e), PBM contracts must comply with pharmacy network-access requirements.
📬 Mail order generally must be OPT-IN.
A PBM cannot require mail-order or delivery unless the prescription drug cannot be obtained at any retail pharmacy in the patient’s network.
🏪 Choosing retail should not mean a penalty.
Patients generally cannot be charged additional retail cost sharing or given a lower quantity limit simply because they decline mail order.
💙 Your pharmacy choice matters.
If your insurance tells you that you must leave your local pharmacy and use a particular chain, specialty pharmacy, or mail-order service, ask them to explain the restriction and your pharmacy-network options.
Don’t assume “your insurance requires it” is the end of the conversation. Know your rights.
