The language we use.

Recently, I went to Indigipalooza at The Wilma and heard Robin Wall Kimmerer , author of Braiding Sweetgrass, speak.

She talked about language and about how the words we use shape the reality in which we live.

One example was the English word “it.”

When we call a tree, a river, an animal, or a plant “it,” we create a linguistic distance between ourselves and the living world. We make a distinction between “us” and “it.”

That distinction can make it easier to see the natural world as something separate from us—something to extract from, consume, or discard.

She explained how a cornerstone of Indigenous languages is that they recognize the animacy and personhood of the natural world, which offers a very different relationship.

I went home thinking about how much this applies to medicine, too.

I don’t want to see a patient’s body as an “it.”

I don’t see the body as a machine that has malfunctioned and needs to be diagnosed, fixed, and sent on its way.

And I don’t want to view plants simply as substances to extract and prescribe in order to make a symptom go away.

I’m much more interested in the landscape.

Hey, Missoula. Dr. O’Brien here.
I’m the newest doctor at Aralia Health, and I’m so happy to be here.

I’m a Naturopathic Physician, bodyworker, and somatic practitioner. Some of the areas I work with include gut health, thyroid + hormone health, injury recovery, complex cases, reproductive and LGBTQIA+ health, abdominal massage, and pelvic floor care.

I’ve been humbled by the welcome I’ve received since arriving here, and I love how kind and super chill Missoulians are. It feels special to be stepping into the web of a true community.
As I’ve been settling in, I’ve also been thinking a lot about what it means to practice medicine differently. I’m looking forward to sharing more about that here—and to getting to know this community more deeply.

Do you have local people, places, organizations, or shops you think I should know about? Please drop them in the comments.

I’d love to hear from you.

Did you know? 👀

The FDA removed the strongest “black box” warning from hormone replacement therapy (HRT) used for menopause — a major shift that didn’t get nearly enough attention.

For years, HRT carried serious warnings about risks like breast cancer, heart attack, stroke, and dementia. But those warnings were based on older research that experts now say doesn’t reflect how hormone therapy is used today.

👉 What we know now:
• For many people, HRT can be safe and effective — especially when started at the right time
• Updated research shows risks are more nuanced and individualized than previously thought
• Removing the warning helps support more informed, less fear-based decisions

⚖️ And here’s something important:
It’s actually very difficult for the FDA to reverse or remove major safety warnings on medications. The fact that this change happened speaks to how strong and consistent the updated evidence has become.

💬 Why this matters:
For years, people were told to “just deal with” symptoms like hot flashes, brain fog, low energy, sleep disruption, and mood changes — when effective, evidence-based options were available.

✨ At Aralia Health, our practitioners stay up to date with the latest hormone guidelines and research. We specialize in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for people of all genders, with an individualized, evidence-based approach to care.

Bottom line: Hormone therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all — but the conversation around it is finally catching up to the science.
