Franklin Primary Health Center has partnered with the Alabama Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (ABCCEDP) to provide free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women.

The program is available to Alabama residents who are ages 40–64, uninsured, and have a household income at or below 250% of the Federal Poverty Level. Women ages 21–39 who have had a tubal ligation or partial hysterectomy with the cervix remaining may also qualify for free cervical cancer screening.

Free services may include pelvic exams, Pap smears, clinical breast exams, mammograms, and, when needed, diagnostic services such as ultrasounds, colposcopies, and biopsies.

Early detection can make an important difference. Franklin is proud to partner with ABCCEDP to help remove financial barriers and make these important preventive health services more accessible to women in our community.

🎓 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT | Emma Landers, PharmD Candidate 2027 🎓

Franklin Primary Health Center is proud to support the education and professional development of future healthcare professionals through meaningful, hands-on clinical learning experiences. Emma Landers, PharmD Candidate 2027 at Auburn University Harrison College of Pharmacy, recently completed her Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) Block 3 rotation at Franklin Primary Health Center.

APPE rotations are an important part of the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum and give student pharmacists the opportunity to move beyond the classroom and apply their knowledge in real-world healthcare settings. Through these advanced clinical experiences, students work alongside healthcare professionals, strengthen their clinical decision-making skills, gain exposure to different areas of practice and develop a deeper understanding of the pharmacist’s role as part of an interdisciplinary care team.

During her rotation at Franklin, Emma had the opportunity to learn alongside providers in primary care, behavioral health, HIV care and rheumatology. Each experience allowed her to build on the clinical knowledge gained throughout pharmacy school while seeing firsthand how providers evaluate the complete picture when developing treatment plans for patients.

In primary care, Emma gained additional experience with common chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension and observed how providers consider laboratory values, medications, adherence, lifestyle and patient-specific factors when determining the most appropriate course of care.

Her behavioral health experience reinforced the importance of communication, patience and active listening, particularly when working with children and families. She also gained greater exposure to HIV treatment, including antiretroviral therapy, medication adherence, drug interactions and long-term monitoring, as well as rheumatology and the use of biologic therapies for autoimmune and inflammatory conditions.

Beyond the clinical knowledge she gained, one of the most meaningful parts of Emma’s rotation was seeing how Franklin providers work to address barriers that can make it difficult for patients to receive or continue care.

Emma reflected: “Providing good healthcare is not always about choosing the ideal treatment on paper, but finding a treatment that is safe, effective, affordable and realistic for the individual patient.”

Her experience at Franklin reinforced the importance of empathy, communication, advocacy and collaboration and demonstrated how pharmacists and other healthcare professionals can work together to improve patient outcomes.

By welcoming students into clinical settings across our organization, Franklin is helping future healthcare professionals gain valuable experience while giving them a firsthand look at the importance of compassionate, patient-centered care.

We are proud to have been part of Emma’s educational journey and wish her continued success as she completes her PharmD training and prepares for a career in pharmacy.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT | BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Meet Amalia Cunningham, RT(R)(M), Lead Mammography Technologist at Franklin Primary Health Center!

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are proud to spotlight Amalia and the important role she plays in helping women in our community take charge of their breast health.

For Amalia, mammography is more than a career — it’s personal. Her mother is a breast cancer survivor whose cancer was detected early through annual screening mammograms.

“If it had not been for her yearly screening mammograms, her cancer may not have been caught in such an early stage. I am so grateful that it was, and I want this outcome for as many women as possible.”

Amalia has worked in mammography for more than three years and has been part of the Franklin family for nearly two years. One of her favorite parts of her job is building relationships with patients and seeing familiar faces return year after year.

Her message to women this Breast Cancer Awareness Month is simple: early detection is key.

“Getting your yearly mammogram screening at Franklin Primary is a great way to start your wellness journey.”

Franklin makes breast care convenient, too. Patients can often be seen the same day, and with women’s health services available in one location, Franklin offers a true one-stop shop for women’s care — helping patients avoid the inconvenience of traveling to multiple facilities for screenings and follow-up care.

Franklin also offers 3D mammography, an advanced screening technology that captures multiple images of the breast from different angles to create a more detailed view of the breast tissue. This can help radiologists see areas more clearly and may improve the detection of breast cancer, particularly in women with dense breast tissue.

A routine mammogram typically takes only 15–30 minutes, and Amalia works to make sure every patient feels informed, comfortable and supported throughout the process.

Amalia also reminds women that breast health starts with knowing what is normal for their own bodies and speaking up when something feels different.

“Breast health is nothing to be shy about. You know your body better than anyone, so if you feel a lump or notice something different, do not hesitate to reach out to a provider.”
