From humble beginnings in back rooms of Old Main, Langdon Hall, and Hargis Hall, to celebrating the college's 140th Birthday over the past year, pharmacy at Auburn has built a legacy of creating leaders, healthcare providers, and scientists that improve lives every day!

Happy 141st Birthday as we continue to celebrate Pharmacy at Auburn as it heads toward its sesquicentennial!

Last week was a very interesting Nutrition Rx Day. The box was full of bananas, some had a huge head of cabbage, others had a head of cauliflower. There were large carrots, red onions, limes, mangoes, red hot peppers, a bag of dry goods that contained peanut butter, raisins and two small cartons of shelf-stable milk. There were also two new pieces of produce we had never received - jicamas and a few chayote. A jicama, sometimes called a Mexican turnip or potato, and can be eaten raw in fruit salads using mango and pineapple, as it is sweet and crisp like an apple, or used in stir-fry as it is also sweet and crunchy like a water chestnut. Jicama, after peeling the brown skin, is a safe snack for diabetics because it has a low glycemic load and is good for your heart, because the dietary fiber may lower cholesterol levels. A chayote, although considered a fruit, it is treated like a vegetable. Eaten raw, peeled or not, with a sq**rt of lime juice, it is similar to a pear; eaten cooked, it is similar to a summer squash. It is rich in antioxidants, high in fiber and lowers cholesterol and improves blood flow. Overall, the variety in this week’s Nutrition Rx box offered patients new flavors to try along with nutritious foods that support heart health and balanced eating.

GOOD MORNING MOBILE COUNTY! IT'S THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL! RISE AND SHINE! I hope you have all your supplies, your uniform is clean and neat, your shoes feel good on your feet, you know the time your bus runs and the route, and everybody is happy with their hair (you know that first day of school picture is important). Parents, pack your patients with carline, be on time for after-school pickup, and be ready to listen and talk about everything that happened on your child(ren)'s first day. Administrators and teachers, you've been working hard and prepping all summer... take a deep breath and be ready for the unexpected. Everyone, remember to eat a good, healthy breakfast and pack a good snack. It's the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL! Are you excited?! Everyone, do your best to have the most awesome day possible!

This month's Nutrition Rx box was full of summer goodies. There were plums, apples, bananas, cantaloupe, cabbage, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and a beautiful block of mild cheddar cheese. Patients were also allowed to choose a loaf of bread. Along with the produce, we added a card about how to take care of their produce (how to make it last longer), along with information about high blood pressure/hypertension. A healthy box with healthy information!
