Letting go through meditation is not about forcing thoughts away but rather changing your relationship with them by releasing the "habitual clenching" of the mind and body. When we hold onto past experiences, stress, or worries, it physically and emotionally weighs us down.
If you want to practice letting go on your own, here is a simple, highly effective meditation. Find a comfortable position, rest your hands with your palms open or facing up, (a posture of surrender), and follow these steps:
1. Scan for Physical Tension: We store emotional blockages in our bodies. Drop your shoulders, unclench your jaw, and soften the area around your eyes.
2. Deepen the Exhale: Breathe in deeply and use your exhales to consciously invite your body to feel heavier and melt into stillness.
3. Acknowledge Without Judgment: Bring to mind what you want to release (a worry, a memory, a resentment, or a person). Instead of fighting the uncomfortable feelings, simply acknowledge them.
4. Use a Release Affirmation: Mentally say to yourself: "Thank you for the lessons, but I am ready to let you go. This no longer serves me."
5. Visualize Space: Picture the emotional weight leaving your body like autumn leaves detaching from a tree branch and drifting away into the wind.
I sometimes enjoy playing soft meditative music in the background. This is my go-to collection of Celtic music I often play. I hope you enjoy it.
