Hey friends,
I'm working on a little passion project and I need your help. Will you take a few minutes to complete this survey on your interest in art making? I am especially interested in responses from folks in the QC or surrounding areas. Would you also mind sharing the link to the survey on your FB page? More responses mean more accurate data for me to pull from.

Thanks so much! I appreciate it.

Please take 5-10 minutes to complete this short survey about your interest in art-making. Thank you.

In case you needed another reason to slow down today and behold something artistically beautiful:

A psychological experiment conducted at Kettle's Yard suggests that actively considering the beauty of art increases abstract thinking and “transformative” emotion – helping us escape the “mental trappings” of day-to-day living.

Christopher Germer says it so clearly - our shame evolves from our universal and innocent desire to be loved. When we recognize the common humanity of this experience and offer ourselves a little compassion the shame becomes more manageable.

Check out his 8 minute video on the topic here.

Dr. Chris Germer: “We would never feel shame if we didn’t wish to be loved.” As many of us have experienced, shame can be a very intense, painful, and difficult emotion. But, as Chris Germer, PhD, co-founder of the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion, there is an antidote to shame:

Often we underestimate how much our thoughts shape how we experience an event. In therapy I often teach clients cognitive diffusion skills - to create some reflective distance from our thoughts so we can acknowledge when our narrative is inaccurate and unhelpful.

This meditation uses sound as means to practice identifying the story we tell ourselves. Have a listen.

“I TOOK CARE OF MYSELF and it wasn’t beautiful. I took care of myself and looked at the overdue bills in the face, even though it hurt. I took care of myself and cried ugly through the therapy session; made another appointment for next week. I put in the work and wrote all the bad memories in detail. I apologized to all the friends I didn’t have the energy to talk to. I finally cut off all my dead ends and bought produce; slimly avoided sustaining myself on barbecue chips and poetry. I recycled. I set an alarm for 8 hours of sleep and did not sleep more or less. I took care of myself and it wasn’t bubble baths. It wasn’t lotion at Bath and Bodyworks and three-cheese pizza. It was uncomfortable. It wasn’t beautiful, but I am, and it didn’t have to be beautiful to be worth it.”

So I made a little art on my lunch break today. 🦃😊 Feeling inspired by the two wild turkeys that have been hanging around my office this last week and with the prompting from my art therapy supervisor I painted a little portrait of my turkey friend. I love when they come right up to the window and peak in.

Did you know turkeys can be a symbol of abundance and nourishment? They’re associated with our connection to nature and the Earth and encourage us to share our harvest as well as express gratitude for what we have been provided. It feels very appropriate for a therapy setting. What from your gifts, time, and energy can you share with others AND what are you grateful for? 🦃❤️
