Most people would paint over these walls.
…but if I was renting this place, I’d keep them. 🧠
👉 Here’s why: variability is a powerful [and sometimes overlooked] tool in neuro rehab.
Why? When we practice a skill the same way, in the same setting over and over again, your brain gets good at *that version of the task.
But life doesn’t happen in quiet, predictable environments… it happens in busy kitchens, crowded stores, and loud family gatherings.
Motor learning research shows that practicing with variation (different environments, speeds, surfaces, and visual/cognitive demands) can feel harder in the moment but leads to better retention and carryover into real life. Key: The brain learns the skill, not just the setting.
Visually busy environments add a layer of challenge that trains:
👀 Finding what you need in a cluttered space
👀 Filtering out distractions
👀 Scanning and attending to your full environment
👀 Moving safely while your brain processes a lot at once
Note: For my vestibular/vision/concussion clients, walls like these can be overwhelming, so grading tasks would matter.
📲 Send this to the survivor or to the therapist who’d love these walls too…and isn’t afraid of a little variety.
And SAVE it for when you need the reminder it is okay to add a little spice to your sessions!
