Monroe County Substance Abuse Coalition Located within the United Way building.

The coalition is funded by Community Mental Health Partnership of Southeast Michigan (CMHPSM) and utilizes Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) strategic prevention framework model and seven strategies to affect community level change.

Day 2 of the Youth Summit! 😎 Another picture overload! 📸 Our coalition hosted the Youth Summit on Wednesday again for a second round with different school districts. Another huge thank you to Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan - Monroe, Student Prevention Leadership Team - SPLT and advisors, and Monroe County Intermediate School District - Official Mental Health ISD Team! Day 2 went smoothly, and we could not have done it without EVERYONE'S help!

The Youth Summit was held at Holiday Camp again, where students completed the adventure course to focus on effective communication, trust, safety, and belonging. The other part of the day was spent planning prevention efforts for the upcoming school year. The four initiatives will focus on reducing underage drinking; prescription and over-the-counter drug misuse; youth access to and use of to***co and ni****ne; and youth ma*****na use. Each school brainstormed action steps aligned with these priorities.

Thank you to each of these schools from day 2 and their advisors for attending and participating! We appreciate you as we know it is not easy to be away from the building for a day!

What an amazing two days! 😎 Picture overload! 📸 Our coalition hosted the Youth Summit on Tuesday and Wednesday! We had different schools attend each day. A huge thank you to Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan - Monroe, Student Prevention Leadership Team - SPLT and advisors, and Monroe County Intermediate School District - Official Mental Health ISD Team! We would not have been able to host this without your help!

The Youth Summit was held at Holiday Camp, where students completed the adventure course to focus on effective communication, trust, safety, and belonging. Our coalition first shared this kratom awareness piece a year ago. Recently, packaged kratom was found at the scenes of two deaths at the University of Mississippi.

Although the investigation is not complete, and authorities have not confirmed whether kratom played a role in these deaths, we feel it is critical to share this again.

Please know kratom can cause dependence and withdrawal, and higher doses may lead to serious side effects including nausea, dizziness, seizures, breathing problems, and loss of consciousness. Because kratom products can vary widely in strength and may contain other substances, the risks can be unpredictable.

7-OH (7-hydroxymitragynine) is a highly concentrated kratom compound reported to be 13 times stronger than morphine.

Kratom is sold in several forms, including powders, capsules, tablets, teas, extracts, and liquids. These products may be available at smoke shops, v**e shops, gas stations, convenience stores, and online retailers.

In March 2026, the Michigan House passed a bill that would ban all 7-OH and kratom products. The Michigan Senate has not yet taken up the bill.

Please share this critical information as we work together to stay informed, raise awareness, and be proactive in preventing potential harms associated with kratom.

Healthy ways to recharge include exercise, spending time outdoors, listening to music, talking with friends, practicing yoga, or simply taking a break.
