🪰🌿 SPOTTED LANTERNFLY ALERT! 🌿🪰

While we were out in Whiteford, Michigan, we came across this little guy — a spotted lanternfly! 👀

I'll admit… they are actually pretty cool looking! 😍 Those spotted wings and bright red colors definitely make them stand out. BUT unfortunately, this is one pretty bug we don't want getting too comfortable here. 😬

The spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is an invasive insect originally from Asia. It feeds on the sap of a HUGE variety of plants — more than 70 species, including grapes, apples, hops and many hardwood trees. They especially love tree-of-heaven, another invasive species.

As they feed, they produce a sticky substance called honeydew, which can cover plants and surfaces and encourage the growth of black sooty mold. Large populations can stress plants and potentially cause significant problems for agriculture, gardens and natural ecosystems.

🚗 And here's the really crazy part — they can spread by hitching rides! Their egg masses can be laid on cars, trailers, firewood, outdoor furniture, equipment and other surfaces. That's one reason checking your vehicles and outdoor gear after being in an area with lanternflies is so important.

Michigan has been tracking the spread of spotted lanternfly since it was first detected here in 2022, and confirmed populations are now found across several southeastern Michigan counties, including Monroe.

👉 So if you see one, take a picture and keep an eye out for egg masses. Michigan's current guidance is “See it. Squish it. Report it.” In counties where populations are already confirmed, including Monroe County, sightings do not need to be reported.

Nature is full of some absolutely beautiful creatures… unfortunately, sometimes the pretty ones are troublemakers. 😂🪰
