🦠 New Research on Bifidobacterium Probiotics & Infant Immunity
A recent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Frontiers in Nutrition looked at Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BLa80 in formula-fed infants and toddlers and the results were striking.
Over 6 months, children receiving 5 billion CFU daily showed:
✅ Upper respiratory infection rates of 19.4% vs. 42.5% in the placebo group
✅ Eczema incidence of 27.6% vs. 70% in the placebo group
✅ Fewer GI symptoms including less vomiting, food refusal, and decreased appetite
✅ Higher secretory IgA and lower calprotectin (a marker of gut inflammation)
✅ Enrichment of beneficial microbes like Akkermansia, with improved tryptophan metabolism
The researchers point to the gut-lung axis and gut-skin axis as key mechanisms, reinforcing what we've long understood in integrative health: a healthy gut is foundational to whole-body immunity.
Early childhood is one of the most critical windows for microbiome establishment. Supporting that foundation with the right probiotic strains matters.
What's worth noting: BLa80 is backed by 20+ clinical studies and 24+ published papers, yet it is not widely available in US consumer supplements yet. Most brands simply haven't caught up to the research. This is exactly why staying ahead of the science matters when it comes to recommendations we make at Hitt Holistics. We are not waiting for the mainstream to validate what the evidence already shows.
At Hitt Holistics, staying current with the latest peer-reviewed research is part of how we serve you. While most are just catching up to the gut-lung and gut-skin connections, we've been applying this science in practice because you deserve guidance that's grounded in evidence, not trends.
