People get hungry when they’re out and about, and since babies need to eat more often than most of us, they definitely get hungry while they're on the go! In Canada, your right to nurse your child in public is protected by law. No one is allowed to prevent you from nursing your child simply because you're in a public area (like at a school, in a store, at the park or on public transit) nor can they ask you to cover up, move to another area that is more "discreet", or disturb you while you're nursing.

Knowing your rights can help you feel confident nursing your child ! Looking for tips & tricks to make nursing or pumping on the go easier? Wish there was a way to practice getting out and about with your little one and help build your skills and confidence? We can help! Visit the link in our bio to learn more about our FREE virtual Latch & Learn workshops, or to learn more about our free local Walk & Talk drop-in programs at the park.🌞

Let’s keep talking about maternal mental health—especially the parts that still don’t get enough attention.

Here’s one thing that’s not talked about often enough. Dysmorphic Milk Ejection Reflex (D-MER)

****Have you ever felt a sudden wave of sadness, anxiety, or even dread right as your milk lets down—then wondered what was wrong with you?

You’re not alone. This could be Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex (D-MER) — a real, physical response caused by a sudden drop in dopamine during letdown. It’s not about how you feel about breastfeeding. It’s not postpartum depression. But it can deeply impact your emotional well-being.

D-MER is linked to maternal mental health in powerful ways. When parents don’t know what it is, they may blame themselves, feel ashamed, or even stop breastfeeding out of distress.

Here’s some ways to support dopamine levels:

*Vitamin D
*Vitamin B6
*Magnesium
*Sunlight
*Excercise
*Promote gut health
*DHA
*Tyrosine & Phenalyalanine
*Fava Beans
*Massage Therapy
*Meditation

You can also use herbal remedies or medication such as:
*bupropion (Warning- this could affect milk supply) due to raising dopamine levels that can decrease prolactin levels
*low dose Naltrexone
*Herbs such as Rhodiola, Ashwaganda, Gingko, Cowhage, Evening Primrose Oil, & Tumeric

If you’ve experienced emotional dips around feeding, talk to a lactation consultant who understands D-MER. Awareness and compassion make all the difference. 💚

At Baby-Friendly designated facilities, routine newborn procedures like APGAR scoring and vital signs are done while baby is skin-to-skin with mom. Procedures that require separation, like bathing and weighing, are delayed until after the first feeding or initial hour of skin-to-skin contact. And when separation is necessary, baby is kept at your bedside whenever possible.

Because the bath can wait, but the first moments with your baby can't.

No rushing your skin to skin time together. It’s so important for both mom and baby…

Q: Skin-to-skin after delivery: How long should it last?

A: There’s no rush! Research shows that keeping newborns and parents skin-to-skin for at least an hour, and ideally up to two, has big benefits:

✅ Breastfeeding gets off to the best start
✅ Baby's temperature regulates
✅ The microbiome gets a healthy start
✅ Milk supply gets a strong foundation

Life with a newborn will be hectic soon enough … but this time should feel like it stands still. It's when parent and baby meet, bond, and feed for the very first time.

At Baby-Friendly facilities, immediate skin-to-skin is the standard of care, practiced regardless of method of birth, whenever medically possible. Trained staff stay close by to support parent and baby and offer gentle assistance with baby's first latch and feed.

A lot of people already know they aren’t meant to be a primary pump if you’re pumping routinely, especially not if exclusively pumping. However, that doesn’t mean they don’t have any benefit and that we hate them all. Some are definitely better than others, and some people can get away with using them more than others .. but there can still be some benefits.

If you can’t fit in a needed pumping session unless it’s with a wearable pump, that’s literally saving your milk supply and breastfeeding journey.

Maybe you’re struggling to fit in some needed pumping and a wearable pump a couple times a day makes it more sustainable. We’ve seen it help people who are exclusively pumping go from 6x a day to 8x a day. That helps them be able to give milk to baby for longer which is still worth celebrating.

We find clients often scared to admit they bought a wearable pump, but we promise we don’t hate them. Maybe we hate the cheap crappy ones that just lead to clogged ducts and low milk supply but there can be a time and place for a good wearable pump. before you ask - we aren’t able to make recommendations for you in the comments 😬

Today we honor the International Day for Maternal Health and Rights.

At BFUSA, we believe that every mother has the right to evidence-based information on infant feeding care, so she can make informed decisions for herself and her baby.

She has the right to compassionate, personalized support that meets her where she is.

And she has the right to have her autonomy and choices respected, without pressure, judgment, or assumption.

At Baby-Friendly USA, we support Baby-Friendly designated facilities across the country to meet these standards, because the quality of care a mother receives in those early days shapes her experience, her confidence, and her health for years to come.
