Hey Birmingham! Have you registered for the Justice Summit on September 10th?

Danny Trejo, actor, author, and advocate whose own journey through incarceration and recovery has shaped decades of advocacy work, is joining us as our keynote speaker.

This summit exists because the intersection of the justice system and substance use is one of the most under-resourced spaces in behavioral health. Too many people cycle through incarceration without access to the treatment and support that actually breaks the cycle. We're bringing together professionals, advocates, and people with lived experience to change that, one community at a time.

📍 Birmingham, AL
🗓️ September 10, 2026
⏰ 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM

Registration and full details at VitALalabama.com. This one's worth clearing your calendar for.

September is Su***de Prevention Month, and communities across Alabama are coming together to promote connection, awareness, and well-being. đź’™

What’s one small step you can take if you need help?

You can call 988 and talk with someone about what you’re going through, or reach out to a trusted friend and ask them to check in with you.

Be clear about what you need. Sometimes you want advice, and sometimes you just need someone to listen. You don't have to have all the answers. You just have to take the first step.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day!

This year's theme, "25 Years On. Still Needed," says something we all know but don't say enough: we shouldn't still need a day like this. But we do.

Overdose doesn't discriminate. It touches families across every Alabama community, urban and rural, every income level, every background. Behind every statistic is someone's son, daughter, parent, or friend.

Here's what we know works: overdose is preventable. Naloxone saves lives. Open, judgment-free conversations save lives. Access to treatment and recovery support saves lives. Communities that show up for each other save lives.

If you've lost someone to overdose, we see you and we hold space for that grief today.

If you're in recovery, your story matters and it's proof that healing is possible.

If you're a provider, clinician, or first responder doing this work every day, thank you for showing up for people when it counts most.

VitAL is committed to equipping Alabama's healthcare providers, clinicians, and communities with the tools and training to prevent overdose and support recovery.

Learn the signs of an overdose. Carry naloxone. Talk about it openly. Reach out if you or someone you love needs support.

We're building a future where this day isn't needed anymore. Until then, we keep showing up.

Today marks the start of the Project Possibilities Sustainability Conference in Orange Beach, presented in partnership with the Alabama Department of Mental Health, ABPP, ROSS, and People Engaged In Recovery.

Over the next three days, professionals from across the justice, recovery, and public safety systems will dig into evidence-based practices, cross-system collaboration, and real strategies for building recovery-focused initiatives that last, all in service of one goal: stronger public safety outcomes and better reentry support for justice-involved Alabamians impacted by substance use.

Grateful for every clinician, officer, peer specialist, and community partner making the trip to be in that room. This work only moves forward when we do it together.

“Be a coffee bean.”

Damon West - Damon West - knows what it means to face the boiling water of life, and he’s bringing that message straight to Alabama.

📣 Damon West is our keynote speaker on September 11th in Huntsville, sharing the story that’s changed how thousands think about adversity, choice, and change. It started with a lesson from a fellow inmate in a Texas prison back in 2009, and it’s grown into a message about becoming the change agent in your own life.
