Exercise May Help Reduce Post-Stroke Depression.

It’s estimated that about 3-in-10 stroke survivors develop depression. A systematic review of 33 studies found that exercise interventions—including aerobic exercise, tai chi, resistance training, yoga, and rehabilitation therapy—were associated with improvements in depressive symptoms among patients with post-stroke depression.

Health Alert: Premature Birth May Influence Blood Pressure Decades Later. Using data from the Women's Health Initiative study, researchers report that women born four or more weeks premature had a 13% greater risk of developing hypertension in adulthood than those delivered full-term. The authors speculate that premature birth may interrupt critical stages of fetal development, particularly in organs such as the kidneys and blood vessels that help regulate blood pressure throughout life. Journal of Developmental Origins of Health and Disease, May 2026

Diet: Ultra-Processed Foods Linked to Memory Performance. Ultra-processed foods are industrially manufactured products that often contain refined ingredients, preservatives, artificial additives, and high amounts of sugar, salt, or unhealthy fats. A study of 416 young adults found that higher consumption of ultra-processed foods, which often lack nutrients that support brain health, was associated with poorer performance on short-term memory assessments. Nutritional Neuroscience, May 2026

Exercise: Breathing Exercises May Affect Breast Milk Composition. A study involving 128 mothers of premature infants found that breathing exercises lowered anxiety scores. Interestingly, the researchers observed that mothers who experienced greater reductions in anxiety tended to have breast milk with higher fat and energy content, suggesting that maternal stress levels may influence certain aspects of breast milk quality. The findings suggest that structured breathing techniques may be a useful tool for supporting emotional well-being during neonatal intensive care hospitalization. Midwifery, May 2026

Chiropractic: Try Chiropractic First! Among workers with a work-related back injury, those who first sought treatment from a chiropractor were less than half as likely to be out of work one year later compared with those who initially sought care from a medical physician (4.8% vs. 11.8%). American Journal of Industrial Medicine, May 2026

Mental Attitude: Body Image Concerns Associated with Anxiety and Depression. A scoping review of 18 studies found that body dissatisfaction was consistently associated with anxiety and depression among university students. Researchers identified self-esteem, social comparison, and fear of negative evaluation as important factors that may help explain this relationship. Frontiers in Psychology, May 2026

Wellness/Prevention: Exercise and Nutrition May Help Prevent Falls. Sarcopenia is a condition characterized by age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, which can increase the risk of serious falls. An umbrella review found evidence that higher protein intake, vitamin D supplementation, and balance and multicomponent exercise programs are associated with a lower risk of falls. The findings suggest that a comprehensive approach incorporating all of these factors may improve fall prevention efforts in older adults. Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging, June 2026

Pelvic Tilt Linked to Increased Pain from Sitting.

It has long been thought that reduced lumbar muscle activity is the primary reason prolonged sitting can worsen low back pain. However, a recent study found that increased posterior pelvic tilt after 30 minutes of sitting on a couch was associated with greater low back pain, independent of lower back muscle activity. The authors suggest that postural strategies encouraging better pelvic alignment may help reduce discomfort during prolonged sitting.

Health Alert: Fractures Account for 1 in 20 Senior ER Visits. Following an analysis of National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey emergency department data, researchers found that 5.5% of emergency room visits among older adults involved fractures, with falls accounting for 74.5% of these injuries. Injury, May 2026

Diet: Meal Timing May Influence Sleep Quality. A systematic review of 57 studies from 44 countries found the combination of skipping breakfast and eating the last meal of the day later in the evening was consistently associated with poor sleep quality among college students. The authors note that meal timing can influence the body's internal clock, which helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Sleep Medicine Reviews, May 2026

Exercise: Resistance Training May Improve Blood Vessel Health. Blood vessel dysfunction is common in people with type 2 diabetes and contributes to cardiovascular disease risk. A review of 12 randomized controlled trials found that resistance-training-based exercise programs were effective at reducing arterial stiffness and improving endothelial function—important markers of cardiovascular health—in adults with type 2 diabetes. Frontiers in Endocrinology, May 2026

Chiropractic: Spinal Manipulation Benefits Older Adults with Chronic Spinal Pain. According to a review of data from nine clinical trials, spinal manipulative therapy—the primary treatment provided by chiropractors—offers an effective option for managing certain chronic spinal conditions in older adults, particularly chronic neck pain and lumbar spinal stenosis. Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association, April 2026

Mental Attitude: Higher Life Satisfaction Linked to Lower Stroke Risk. Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, researchers found that middle-aged and older adults who reported higher levels of life satisfaction had a 17% lower risk of stroke over the following nine years. The authors note that people with greater life satisfaction may be more likely to engage in behaviors that support cardiovascular health. Cerebrovascular Diseases Extra, May 2026

Wellness/Prevention: Life's Essential 8 May Promote Healthier Aging. The American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 is a set of health-related behaviors and clinical measures—including not smoking, achieving adequate sleep duration, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a nutritious diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and having healthy levels of blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure—that are associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, researchers found that individuals with diabetes and/or hypertension who achieved higher Life's Essential 8 scores not only had a lower risk of heart disease-related mortality, but they also had a reduced risk of early death. The authors attribute much of these benefits to lower levels of inflammation and slower biological aging. Mediators of Inflammation, May 2026

DAILY HEALTH UPDATE

Health Alert: Hospital Encounters May Help Identify Patients at Stroke Risk. Following an analysis of health records from nearly 5,000 first-time stroke patients, researchers found that emergency room visits for issues such as circulatory problems, injuries, and unexplained symptoms were associated with an 8.5-fold higher risk of stroke in the following week. The authors note that hospital encounters may offer unique opportunities for earlier stroke risk recognition and prevention strategies. Cerebrovascular Diseases, April 2026

Diet: Positive Food Environment May Influence Adult Food Choices. According to a recent study, supportive food parenting practices early in life—such as consistently offering healthy foods without forcing them, making fruits and vegetables readily available, modeling healthy eating behaviors, creating regular meal routines, encouraging variety without pressure or punishment, and allowing children some autonomy in hunger and fullness cues—were associated with healthier dietary habits at age 19. The findings suggest that positive childhood eating environments may influence long-term relationships with food. Nutrition Journal, May 2026

Exercise: Even Modest Amounts of Regular Exercise May Support Brain Health. Cerebrovascular disease refers to conditions that affect blood flow and blood vessels in the brain, potentially contributing to cognitive decline and dementia. A recent study found that patients with cerebrovascular disease who walked for 15 to 30 minutes several times a week—which may improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and support vascular health—were less likely to progress to dementia than their inactive peers. Experimental Gerontology, April 2026

Chiropractic: Head Position During Rear-End Collisions May Influence Injury Severity. Compared to forwardfacing posture, researchers observed that non-neutral head postures during a rear-end collision were associated with increased head acceleration, which may place greater loading and strain on the tissues supporting the cervical spine, potentially elevating injury risk. Annals of Biomedical Engineering, April 2026

Mental Attitude: Good Cholesterol and Vitamin D Levels May Influence Depression Risk. Blood samples collected from nearly 600 adults revealed significantly lower levels of vitamin D and HDL cholesterol among those with depression. On the other hand, the data showed that healthy vitamin D and cholesterol status were each linked to a lower risk for the mood disorder. The authors note that vitamin D and HDL may influence inflammation, brain signaling, and overall metabolic health in ways that affect mood regulation. Alpha Psychiatry, April 2026

Wellness/Prevention: Frailty Linked to Higher Risk of Dementia. While frailty is generally associated with reduced physical reserve and increased vulnerability to illness, injury, and functional decline, a meta-analysis of 13 studies found that frailty is also associated with a 76% higher risk of dementia. The findings suggest that recognizing frailty before significant physical decline develops may help reduce dementia risk later in life. Frontiers in Neurology, April 2026

High Sodium Intake Linked to Heart Failure Risk.

Using data from the Southern Community Cohort Study, researchers reported that consuming about 4,200 mg of dietary sodium per day—well above the recommended 2,300 mg—may increase the risk of heart failure by 15%, independent of known risk factors such as high blood pressure, overall diet quality, and caloric intake.

Hearing Impairment May Affect Brain Health.

A narrative review noted that age-related hearing loss is consistently associated with accelerated cognitive decline and increased dementia risk. Several possible explanations have been proposed, including increased mental effort required for listening, reduced social interaction, and structural brain changes caused by reduced auditory stimulation over time. Evidence also suggests that the use of hearing aids and cochlear implants, particularly during the early stages of hearing loss, may support healthier cognitive aging.
