Listeners to the podcast are encouraged to listen to the dialog and the narrations to enjoy a story using their sense of smell, taste, touch and hearing rather than depending on their sense of sight. Sighted people can and do enjoy all sorts of podcasts, but they might not be used to podcasts that are more of a performance and a story. Not being able to see the action may be new to them.

Six dots -- six bumps in different patterns spreading out over the page. What are they? Numbers, letters, words that make up stories, music, math, science -- nearly anything that can be written! Who created this incredible code that allows people who are blind to both read and write? None other than Louis Braille (1809-1852), a French teenager who was blind and wanted very much to learn.

American Printing House (APH) Braille Bug is a kids' site that teaches sighted children grades 3 through 6 about braille, and encourages literacy among sighted and visually impaired children in a fun environment packed with facts, information, games, graphics, and activities.

"I can’t emphasize enough the role of independent mobility in my life. When I learned that I could walk around unfamiliar places, cross streets and take trips on the bus by myself, my confidence soared. Not only was I confident about my ability to travel, but this confidence flowed over into other things I wanted to accomplish such as going to college, getting work, developing a career, having a family, and so on. I knew I could accomplish all of these things because I had the skill I needed to get to all the places I needed to go.

So when I hold a cane in my hand, I don’t think of it as a symbol of blindness. It represents my ability to take off and do what needs doing!"

We continue to celebrate the achievements of those who are blind and visually impaired on White Cane Awareness Day.
Harriet Tubman - (c. 1820 - 10 March 1913) Harriet Tubman was a slave throughout her youth until she eventually escaped captivity. When she had reached Canada she returned to the lands and brought hundreds of black slaves back to safety, saving them from slavery by escaping from what they then called The Underground Railroad. After a severe wound to the head, which was inflicted by a slave owner before her escape, she became visually impaired and had seizures. This did not keep her from fighting for the freedom of her people.

White Cane Awareness Day celebrates blind and visually impaired people's achievements in the United States every year. It is also a reminder of how the white cane is an important tool in helping those who are blind and visually impaired achieve greater independence. Today we will be sharing stories, articles, and images that help bring better awareness! Join us in !

⭐️ October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month and we have a WONDERFUL program that has helped countless students successfully work their way through college!
🙋 Harriette Dorosin and Kathy Kathy Abercrombie King are the two staff members that work in this program and they are EXCELLENT at what they do!
📌The goal of this program is to ease the transition from high school to college for students with learning disabilities and their families. Services are also offered to adults of any age who have learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, and other cognitive disabilities.
❓ What does the Learning Disabilities program offer? Assistance with securing educational accommodations that will help enhance academic success and completion of required coursework. Students will explore their learning styles and identify academic accommodations and strategies that will help them succeed in college. To further aid in the student’s success in college, students and families participate in a family conference to discuss the results of the evaluation.
