Alabama Functional Medicine

Alabama Functional Medicine Our mission at Alabama Functional Medicine is to give you the tools and treatment needed to be the healthiest version of yourself you can be.

At Alabama Functional Medicine, we stay on the cutting edge of technology to put the latest research to work for you. In our practice, we learn as much as we can about you and new technologies to help us do that. We want to really take care of you because we can. Unlike most practices, we offer something different. We suggest some tests that insurance doesn’t cover, because we know smart patients

see that their health is worth paying for. People are using their health care dollars as they see fit to care for themselves and their families and we are here to help you make those smart decisions along the way.

We hear all the time from sick patients "But my labs are normal”
Well, "normal" doesn’t always mean ideal...

"Normal" may just mean your kidneys work
(which is good, but not the whole picture)

That doesn’t mean your body is functioning the way it was designed to...

It may mean there's something else making you feel icky that needs to be figured out.

"Ideal" is where you want to be,
we ask the right questions to help get you there

So we can take bodies from surviving to truly thriving!

Just got back from Dallas and honestly… my head is still spinning a little. (Oh, the sound starts around 1:45; had a little mic glitch.)

Spent the weekend listening to physician after physician share what they’re seeing, researching, and changing in practice. The interesting part? Many of them had never worked together, but the same themes kept coming up over and over.

A few that hit me hard:

• The body whispers long before it screams. We may be missing opportunities years before disease shows up on “normal” labs.

• I came back thinking about blood vessels completely differently. Not just “blood goes here, blood comes back.” There’s way more happening there than we realized. I’ve been thinking about the glycocalyx with almost every patient conversation since getting home.

• Nervous system regulation isn’t optional anymore. Sleep. Grounding. Time outside. Feeling safe. Nearly every speaker touched on it. The body heals differently when it feels safe.

• Gut health, histamine, hormones, immunity… they aren’t separate conversations. Pull one thread and they all move.

• Resilience matters. The question isn’t just “What disease do you have?” It’s “Why did the terrain shift?” What changed? What made the body less resilient?

This also reinforced something we’ve been saying for years with the Saluxis Method:

Release. Replenish. Reset. Rewire.

Also… slight change of pace in the middle of all this science: my daughter Selah graduates tonight, and I’m one proud dad. 🎓 She probably could have graduated years ago, but tonight’s the night.

Watch the replay if you missed it. There’s a lot here, but I think where medicine is heading is incredibly exciting.

...and five minutes later somehow ends up blindfolded in a spinning spaceship chair. 🚀😂

No, seriously...

This conference had some of the most fascinating conversations around nervous system regulation, recovery, resilience, and where medicine may be heading next.

Join us LIVE at 1:00 PM as Ryan McWhorter, MD, shares what surprised him most and why it actually matters for patients.

Also... if anyone knows what level of the Saluxis Method includes intergalactic healing recliners, let us know below. 👇

What happens when Dr. McWhorter disappears to Dallas for a few days with some of the biggest minds in medicine...? 👀

Apparently: pages(!!) of notes, futuristic technology, and a lot of “wait...this is REALLY interesting...” with tons of research.

Join us LIVE today at 1:00 PM as Doc shares his biggest takeaways from the conference:
• why so many people feel “stuck”
• what kept showing up across specialties
• why symptoms can appear before labs change
• what has him most excited about where medicine is headed

And yes... we may discuss whatever this thing is. 👈😂

My philosophy over the last 30 years boils down to this...

If you give your body what it needs,
It’s amazing what it can accomplish!

Your body can thrive...
But it has to be able to deal with toxicities
and start performing better in its roles

And sometimes it needs support to do that.

Our job is to figure out what you need!

Once we do... the sky’s the limit!

If you're struggling with health conditions...
overwhelmed...can’t stand to watch another YouTube video...another social post....try another prescription that fails...wait six months to see a doctor, just to be dismissed...

I designed the Saluxis Method for you!

We noticed that if we did certain things, as a rule…
patients would get better, regardless of their problem.

The Saluxis Method solves that overwhelmed feeling....

and makes it simple what to actually do,
to get where you want to be!

Health is a skill you can learn; it’s not just a blessing

Health is something you can attain.

So how do you attain it?

By understanding what brings true health
and what your body actually needs to be healthy.

Which is what functional medicine gets to the core of, and that's why I practice it.

Why most magnesium shortchanges you. And why Mag3 does not.

Most common forms of magnesium never reach your brain.

Your brain has a strict door policy—the blood-brain barrier—and most forms of magnesium don't get through it. So even if you're supplementing, your brain may not be getting what it needs.

MIT researchers figured out why. And more importantly, how to fix it. By binding magnesium to threonate, a vitamin C metabolite the brain already accepts, they found a way in.

That's the science behind Mag3, formulated by AFM's own Ryan McWhorter, MD.

Mag3 pairs that brain-targeted threonate with magnesium glycinate — one of the most absorbable forms available — for whole-body support alongside the brain benefits.

Your brain clears waste, builds neurotransmitters, and resets itself every night.

That takes magnesium. The right kind, delivered to the right place.

If you've tried magnesium and felt nothing... this could be why.

Mag3 is available now at Alabama Functional Medicine. Grab yours today!

Gut health isn't guesswork.

One of the ways we evaluate the gut is through a GI-MAP — a stool test that uses DNA-based technology to look at what may be happening inside your digestive tract.

It can help evaluate things like:
Beneficial and unwanted bacteria
Yeast or fungal overgrowth
H. pylori
Digestive enzyme output
Immune response
Gut barrier integrity
Inflammation markers

From there, we build a plan to help remove what doesn't belong, support what's missing, and support gut repair.
For many patients, this process may take around 8–16 week. It depends on what the test shows and how the body responds.

Because when the gut is out of balance, the whole body can feel it. Low energy, brain fog, bloating, skin issues, frustrating bathroom symptoms... these are often connected.

On May 14, we're breaking down exactly how this works + more!

Donna Woods, CRNP, is hosting a live event walking through how we assess and address gut health from a functional medicine perspective — including what advanced testing actually measures and where to start when restoring gut function.
