Diagnosis Story: Elisa, Mama Bear to Peter
“When I got the call about our NIPT (non-invasive prenatal test) results, I was standing in a quilt shop browsing fabric. After four boys and one girl, I was so excited to finally find out if this baby was another boy or a girl. I remember pressing my midwife to just tell me quickly… but instead, she grew quiet.
She told me it was ‘not all good news’ and said she needed to speak with both my husband and me together that evening. That night, she told us our baby most likely had Trisomy 18 and that babies like him were ‘not expected to live.’
She also specifically told me not to Google the diagnosis.
Of course… that was the very first thing I did.
Soon we were referred to Maternal Fetal Medicine. After experiencing three miscarriages before this pregnancy, I was clinging tightly to hope because I had made it farther with this baby than I had with the others.
But many of the specialists painted an overwhelmingly hopeless picture. We were repeatedly encouraged to prepare for death instead of being offered support to fight for our son’s life. We were told the ‘kindest’ option would be to induce early, hold him, and let him pass away in our arms.
But we could not accept that.
After several appointments, we finally found doctors willing to care for our son and offer him the same medical consideration any other baby would receive. That was all we wanted… for our differently chromosomed baby to be treated like a baby worthy of care.
We fought for him.
And because we did, we were given so many beautiful moments with him.
Peter underwent interventions to repair his heart and support his lungs. He faced pulmonary hypertension and many medical challenges, but he also experienced love, joy, cuddles, smiles, and life surrounded by his family.
Peter lived for one year and two weeks before going to Heaven.
And I would do it all over again.
I am so thankful I did not let fear or pressure convince me to simply let my baby die early. Because of the care he received, we were able to truly know him, love him, and experience the beauty of his life.
And his life was beautiful.”
