💜 Full Circle.

Earlier this year, the White Rose Resistance selected Mama Bear Care as the recipient of their 2025 Giving Tuesday Campaign.

Because of their generosity, our first-ever Mama Bear Retreat became a reality. A sacred weekend where grieving mothers gathered to remember their babies, share their stories, encourage one another, and find hope in Christ.

Now, we are honored to be participating in the upcoming Last Stand Conference as a sponsor and exhibitor, with the opportunity to share the mission of Mama Bear Care with hundreds of conference attendees.

Would you pray with us?

Pray that God would open doors for meaningful conversations, connect us with people who share a heart for families facing difficult prenatal diagnoses and infant loss, and raise up the support needed to continue expanding the ways we provide fierce love and tender care to our mamas and their precious babies.

We are so grateful for partners like The White Rose Resistance who make this work possible. 💜

Meet Allen & Patricia Cooke
💗
When families receive a life-limiting prenatal diagnosis, they often find themselves overwhelmed by fear, grief, uncertainty, and unanswered questions.

Allen and Patricia understand that journey personally. Before joining Mama Bear Care, they walked alongside their own family as grandparents to their precious granddaughter, Jewel, who was diagnosed with Trisomy 18 before birth.
💗
Today, they serve Mama Bear Care families through Christian counseling, prayer support, and compassionate guidance rooted in both professional training and personal experience.

As certified AACC counselors and founders of Paraclete Counseling Services, they have helped many families navigate prenatal diagnoses, NICU journeys, infant loss, and the difficult emotions that often accompany these experiences.
💗
And because of the generosity of our monthly supporters, these counseling services are available to our Mama Bears completely FREE of charge.

Dear mama, if you are struggling, please know that you do not have to walk this road alone. Message us today to learn more about the free counseling services offered through Mama Bear Care.

Diagnosis Story: Elisa, Mama Bear to Peter

“When I got the call about our NIPT (non-invasive prenatal test) results, I was standing in a quilt shop browsing fabric. After four boys and one girl, I was so excited to finally find out if this baby was another boy or a girl. I remember pressing my midwife to just tell me quickly… but instead, she grew quiet.

She told me it was ‘not all good news’ and said she needed to speak with both my husband and me together that evening. That night, she told us our baby most likely had Trisomy 18 and that babies like him were ‘not expected to live.’
She also specifically told me not to Google the diagnosis.
Of course… that was the very first thing I did.

Soon we were referred to Maternal Fetal Medicine. After experiencing three miscarriages before this pregnancy, I was clinging tightly to hope because I had made it farther with this baby than I had with the others.

But many of the specialists painted an overwhelmingly hopeless picture. We were repeatedly encouraged to prepare for death instead of being offered support to fight for our son’s life. We were told the ‘kindest’ option would be to induce early, hold him, and let him pass away in our arms.
But we could not accept that.

After several appointments, we finally found doctors willing to care for our son and offer him the same medical consideration any other baby would receive. That was all we wanted… for our differently chromosomed baby to be treated like a baby worthy of care.
We fought for him.
And because we did, we were given so many beautiful moments with him.

Peter underwent interventions to repair his heart and support his lungs. He faced pulmonary hypertension and many medical challenges, but he also experienced love, joy, cuddles, smiles, and life surrounded by his family.

Peter lived for one year and two weeks before going to Heaven.
And I would do it all over again.

I am so thankful I did not let fear or pressure convince me to simply let my baby die early. Because of the care he received, we were able to truly know him, love him, and experience the beauty of his life.

And his life was beautiful.”

A message from our Founder/CEO, Beverly Jacobson:

In early April I experienced one of the biggest blessings so far of leading this ministry: welcoming and serving 10 Mama Bears as we remembered their little ones in heaven during an incredible retreat experience.

Two weeks later I was in a severe car accident, totaling my husband's new Subaru as I drove 2 of our children to an appointment.

The accident came just days after learning that our youngest daughter, Verity, needs double hip surgery ASAP plus corrective spinal surgery because of her worsening scoliosis, which is jeopardizing her lung capacity and potentially threatening her life. (She also battled a respiratory virus in mid-May, which turned into pneumonia, reminding us of the gravity of her situation.)

I don't know where I'd be emotionally if it weren't for the hope of Jesus! It's been rough around here...but I can honestly say I have seen the goodness of God in the land of the living (Psalm 27:13).

More than ever, I'm thinking about legacy these days. From the beginning, I've prayed God would help us build this ministry on such a solid foundation that it will long outlast my lifetime. And--having come face to face with the sobering reality that my lifetime COULD have ended after 51 years in a fatal accident--I'm praying more than ever about the specific next steps I/we should be taking so that the work of Mama Bear Care can and will continue after the Lord calls me home.

Praise God--in the days and even weeks following the accident, when I was forced to take care of myself and my family, the work of the ministry continued! We are building a team, small but solid and amazingly passionate about this work God has given us. Newly diagnosed moms were welcomed; care packages were sent; birth plans were developed; NICU and bereaved moms alike were supported with fierce love and tender care. I am so grateful for (and proud of!) the Mama Bear Care Team and how they are growing in unity with one another and in the gifts God has given them to serve others.

Having a team to lean on is giving me peace of mind about another major pivot I'm dealing with personally. The White Rose Resistance's conference, The Last Stand, is happening in Denver June 5-6, the very date Verity will be in the hospital undergoing her double hip surgery and beginning her weeks-long recovery. While I'm sad to miss being there myself to talk about Mama Bear Care (I truly do love in-person events!), I am confident that my team will do an amazing job at our table. (If you will be there, please go by our booth and say hi to Jill and Lori!)

We still have a long way to go (grow), and we want everyone to be a part of this special mission! If you haven't joined the Mama Bear Movement as a monthly partner, would you prayerfully consider clicking that button below and jumping on board with us? Truly, any level of support that works with your budget would help us so much! Hiring part-time staff is the next step to deepening the level of care for our Mama Bears, but we can't do that without increasing our consistent monthly donations.

And if you're part of the Mama Bear Movement already (thank you!), would you share our mission with one person this week who might have a heart for the work we're doing?

As always, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers for this ministry. Each baby we welcome and each baby we grieve leaves a mark on all of us, and we know their stories are changing hearts and minds all over the world.

With fierce love & tender care,

Beverly Jacobson

May is NEC Awareness Month 💜

NEC (Necrotizing Enterocolitis) is one of those terrifying diagnoses no NICU parent ever wants to hear. It’s a serious, life-threatening intestinal disease that mostly affects premature and medically fragile babies.

NEC happens when a tiny, immature gut becomes severely inflamed and injured. In some babies, parts of the intestine can become damaged, die, or even perforate, leading to dangerous infection and critical illness in a matter of hours.

Doctors and researchers still don’t fully understand why some babies develop NEC while others do not. What we do know is that prematurity is one of the biggest risk factors. Those little digestive systems simply are not fully developed yet, and babies facing other serious medical complications can be especially vulnerable.

Breast milk, whether from mom or a donor, has been shown to help lower the risk. That’s one reason NICU teams work so hard to provide it whenever possible. But even with excellent medical care and breast milk, NEC can still strike unexpectedly.

One day things may seem fairly stable… and then feeding intolerance, a swollen belly, lethargy, or subtle changes in vitals can quickly turn into a medical emergency. It moves fast, and it is heartbreaking.

This month, we shine a light on the brave babies who battled NEC.
We remember the little ones who stayed only a short while but are forever safe in the arms of Jesus.
And we lift up every family whose world changed in an instant because of this devastating diagnosis.

If you are a NICU parent sitting in that fog of fear, exhaustion, grief, and fragile hope right now, please know you are not alone. The Lord sees you. He is near to the brokenhearted, and He holds both you and your precious little one in His hands. We are praying for you and trusting God to carry you through each difficult day with His strength, comfort, and peace. 💜

Every diagnosis story represents a real family walking through fear, uncertainty, deep love, and heartbreak.

At Mama Bear Care, we believe no family should walk that road alone. Through prayer, mentorship, care packages, educational resources, remembrance support, and ongoing encouragement, we come alongside families from diagnosis to delivery and from heartache to hope. 💜
_____

"At 12 weeks pregnant, we took the NIPT test mostly to find out our baby’s gender. We were young first-time parents and never expected anything to be wrong. When the results came back high risk (91%) for Trisomy 18, our world changed instantly. We googled the diagnosis and immediately found the phrase: “Incompatible with Life.” We were devastated.

At 16 weeks, an ultrasound showed several soft markers, and an amniocentesis confirmed that our daughter had Trisomy 18. Hearing those words was heartbreaking. I will never forget that phone call.

Even through the pain, we knew our baby’s life mattered. We chose to carry her for as long as God allowed and to love her every single day we were given. She stayed with us until 40 weeks and 6 days.

During this journey, Mama Bear Care became an incredible source of support, prayer, and comfort for our family. We are so thankful for the love and care they showed us throughout both pregnancy and loss."

“Comfort care.”

It’s a phrase many parents hear shortly after receiving a devastating prenatal diagnosis… often during moments filled with shock, fear, grief, and overwhelming medical information.

Comfort care sounds gentle and reassuring, and of course every parent wants their baby to be cared for and kept comfortable. But many families do not initially realize that this approach can mean foregoing life-saving or life-sustaining medical interventions.

What many parents are not always told, however, is that some babies’ conditions are more stable than expected after delivery and further assessment.

Sometimes prenatal findings are not nearly as severe as first feared.

Sometimes supportive interventions like intubation, oxygen, CPAP, tube feedings, traditional NICU care, and surgeries if necessary can give families meaningful time with their baby.

And sometimes… babies even get to enjoy precious time at home, surrounded by the fierce love and tender care of their families.

At Mama Bear Care, we walk alongside families facing life-limiting prenatal diagnoses by offering emotional support, practical resources, mentorship from other medical moms, care packages, educational materials, and ongoing encouragement from diagnosis to delivery and from heartache to hope.

Every family deserves compassionate, fully informed conversations. They should never feel rushed or pressured into life-altering decisions without the opportunity to ask serious questions and receive real answers.

If you believe families deserve compassionate support, informed choices, and hope-filled care, please consider supporting the work of Mama Bear Care through prayer, sharing our mission, or becoming a monthly donor at mamabearcare.org/donate
