Do you know the different types of heat-related illness and their warning signs?

Heat-related illnesses can range from mild conditions, such as heat rash and heat cramps, to life-threatening emergencies like heat stroke.

🥵 Heat cramps
Painful muscle cramps that can occur when the body loses fluids and electrolytes through sweating.

🥵 Heat syncope
Fainting or lightheadedness that can occur after standing for long periods in the heat, especially when dehydration and fluid loss reduce blood flow to the brain.

🥵Heat exhaustion
Symptoms may include headache, nausea, vomiting, weakness, dizziness, heavy sweating, and feeling faint. Body temperature is often elevated.

🥵Heat stroke
A medical emergency. Heat stroke may include symptoms similar to heat exhaustion, but also involves changes in mental status, confusion, seizures, fainting, or other signs of central nervous system dysfunction. Call 911 immediately if heat stroke is suspected.

Dehydration and salt depletion can make it harder for the body to cool itself. People with heart disease or those taking medications that affect heart function, sweating, or fluid balance may be at higher risk.

🧠Heat-related illness is a clinical diagnosis, which is why it is important to be evaluated by an experienced healthcare provider who can recognize subtle signs and symptoms and act quickly.
