Energy Express Energy Express is a free, six-week, summer reading and nutrition program for children 1st-6th grade living in West Virginia. The answer: Energy Express

We improve reading levels through books, art, drama, and vocabulary. Energy Express is funded by a grant from AmeriCorps. During the summer many children lose academic skills. Without school breakfast and lunch, many children lose nutritional well-being. Many children have few structured learning opportunities. Summer learning and nutritional losses are greater for children living in rural and low

-income communities. Children living in rural and low-income communities often fall behind during the summer months, starting each school year behind where they were the previous spring. Successive summers of limited learning opportunities may cause children to fall below grade level by the end of elementary school—putting them further and further behind more privileged peers.

Making My World a Better Place! 🌍🌈

Small acts of service can make a BIG difference! ❤️

This summer, our Raleigh County Energy Express site brought mentors, children, and community partners together to make an impact. Together, they organized an American Red Cross blood drive right at their program site!

Through this hands-on service project, children learned the importance of giving back and engaging with their community while putting their literacy skills into practice. 📚✨

As a special way to show their appreciation, each blood donor received a handwritten thank-you note from our Energy Express children. 💌

We’re proud to see our young readers discovering that their words, their actions, and their service can help make their world a better place! 🌎💙

These challenges are opportunities to develop a growth mindset, where mistakes are seen as opportunities to learn and grow.
