The Department of Services for the Blind’s Independent Living Program is excited to share that we’re launching a new virtual training program to help our blind and low vision participants build the skills they need to live independently. Virtual group sessions led by an Independent Living Specialist will run from September to early October, using the book “Lessons for Living” as a guide. During each session, the facilitator will talk about how to safely and effectively accomplish a variety of everyday tasks using low vision and blindness adaptive strategies and techniques.
Is this something you’re interested in? If so…
• Do you live in Washington State?
• Are you currently not working or going to school?
• Are you 22 or older?
• Do you have a vision impairment that significantly affects your ability to do the activities you used to do?
If you answered yes to the above questions, would you…
• Like to learn about labeling, organization, and simple low vision tools?
• Like to learn about adaptive cooking techniques, cleaning skills, and strategies for managing clothing care?
• Like to discover new recreation opportunities?
In our new program, you’ll learn about these things and so much more, enabling you to achieve greater independence. If you’re interested, reach out to the IL Program by June 12th, 2026. Please call or email Kim Canaan, IL Program Manager, at 206-616-6789 or [email protected]. We only have a few spots available, so don’t delay!

The celebrity life may not be for me because there’s something far more beautiful about spending time with people who teach me humility in ways fame never could. Elderly people have walked miles ahead of us, and I’m just learning vicariously through them.

Teen Zone Connect is designed to “connect” teens (like you) with local organizations that want to assist, educate, empower, and advocate for teens. There will be informational booths both inside and outside the library, where organizations will be sharing their teen-centered resources, job skill and adulting activities, freebies, handouts, and more. It’s free to attend, and nothing will be for sale.

Curious about the specifics? We’ll update this event as the date gets closer. Stay updated by signing up for our CDA Teen Zone Substack here: https://cdateenzone.substack.com/
