AAHFN In the Know

New research highlights that clinical obesity is not only a significant independent risk factor for developing heart failure, but that obesity-related organ dysfunction further increases both HF risk and all-cause mortality after HF onset.

The study found that the risk of heart failure rises progressively with the number of clinical obesity criteria present, emphasizing the importance of early identification and comprehensive obesity management in preventing HF development and progression.

The American Association of Heart Failure Nurses (AAHFN) is proud to join nursing and healthcare organizations in supporting the States Handling Access to Reciprocity for Employment (SHARE) Act (S. 1101 / H.R. 2332).

This bipartisan legislation would help ensure states can efficiently share information needed to support interstate licensure compacts, making it easier for qualified nurses to practice across state lines while maintaining public safety standards. For heart failure nurses, this means greater workforce mobility and improved access to care for patients who need specialized expertise.

AAHFN HF Care at Home

A successful transition from hospital to home begins with understanding the whole patient picture. Careful assessment during home care admission can support safer transitions, improve recovery, and help reduce the risk of readmission.

Key considerations for patients with heart failure following hospitalization include:

• Understanding the reason for hospitalization and factors such as symptoms, medication adherence, and co-morbidities
• Reviewing diagnostic findings including ejection fraction, renal function, oxygen needs, weight changes, and imaging results
• Completing medication reconciliation and reviewing any recent medication changes
• Confirming follow-up with cardiology or primary care within 7–14 days when possible
• Reviewing recent hospitalization history and patterns of readmission
• Assessing social determinants of health, including transportation, medication access, food insecurity, caregiver support, health literacy, to***co use, and housing concerns

Strong transitions of care create a stronger foundation for heart failure management at home.

AAHFN In the Know

A decade of real-world experience with sacubitril/valsartan (Sac/Val) continues to reinforce what clinical trials first revealed: Sac/Val remains a cornerstone therapy for patients with HFrEF.

Real-world data demonstrate strong efficacy and safety outcomes, but challenges still remain, including delayed initiation and suboptimal dose titration. Increasing clinician and patient awareness may help close these gaps and further reduce the global burden of heart failure.
