๐ง Mental Health Monday: Substances & Your Brain
๐ก Did you know? Substance use can change how your brain processes pleasure, stress, motivation, and decision-making.
Your brain has a reward system that helps you learn from experiences that feel good. Substances can overstimulate this system, particularly pathways involving dopamine, a chemical messenger associated with motivation, learning, and reward.
Over time, repeated substance use can lead to changes in how the brain responds to rewards and stress. This may contribute to cravings, difficulty experiencing pleasure from everyday activities, and challenges with impulse control.
๐ง What happens in the brain?
๐น Reward: Substances can produce powerful feelings of pleasure or relief, reinforcing the urge to use again.
๐น Cravings: The brain learns to associate certain people, places, emotions, and situations with substance use, which can trigger urges even after a period of abstinence.
๐น Decision-making: Changes in brain systems involved in judgment and self-control can make it harder to resist urges, especially during stress.
๐น Recovery: The brain can adapt and heal over time. Treatment, supportive relationships, healthy routines, and medications when appropriate can help support recovery.
โจ Monday Reminder: Your brain can learn patterns that support substance use, but with time, treatment, and support, it can also develop healthier patterns that support recovery.
