Thank you to everyone who took the time to submit nominations and cast votes for our Athlete of the Month. We had another outstanding group of nominees, and we’re excited to announce this month’s honoree, Gretchen Smeltzer!

Gretchen Smeltzer is an inspiring avid runner and community leader whose determination, resilience, and compassion embody the spirit of overcoming adversity through grit and purpose.

A former collegiate athlete, Gretchen has achieved remarkable feats including qualifying for and running the Boston Marathon, completing a rim-to-rim-to-rim crossing of the Grand Canyon in a single day, and tackling countless other races and adventures. Her journey has not been without challenges. She has battled significant injuries and physical setbacks, only to emerge stronger in both body and mind. Friends and fellow runners admire how she turns obstacles into opportunities, proving that perseverance and courage can lead to greater strength.

Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Gretchen’s passion for running is deeply intertwined with her compassion for others. She leads an organization dedicated to ending human trafficking, loving and supporting those around her with the love of Christ. She consistently shows up as a steadfast friend, offering encouragement and help through life’s challenges. Her friends note that she runs every mile with gratitude and purpose, inspiring those around her to tackle hard things.

Gretchen dreams of running across Arkansas to raise awareness for victims of trafficking, and those who know her have no doubt she will make it happen. To know Gretchen is to love her. Her story reminds us all that athletic pursuits and heartfelt service can powerfully intersect to create lasting impact.
