A glimpse into one of the many incredible days at this year’s True Grit Spinal Cord Program’s residential summer program ⛳

Our True Grit campers had the opportunity to get out on the course, build confidence, try something new, and most importantly, have fun thanks to the NJ Golf Foundation, PGA Tour, New Jersey Section PGA, and Rutgers University Golf Course.

From adaptive techniques and equipment to a whole lot of determination, these young golfers showed us what true grit really looks like.

True Grit bridges the gaps beyond traditional rehabilitation through adaptive day events, a residential summer program on the Rutgers campus, and year-round connection with peer mentors and experienced spinal cord injury therapists. Participants gain real-world skills that promote greater independence at home, in school, and in the community while exploring adaptive sports, recreation, education, and employment opportunities.

Meet Nafis & his mom, Nafessa 👋

Nafis is currently in the Children's Specialized Hospital's Intensive Feeding Program. Nafessa shared what it has been like seeing Nafis' journey with the Intensive Feeding Program. This program has helped Nafis continue to grow and hit new milestones with his diet. We are so excited to see all he will accomplish. Keep up the hard work, Nafis!💪

The Children's Specialized Hospital Intensive Feeding Program in Somerset, NJ is an approximately 8-12 week program that uses a goal-oriented and scientifically supported approach based on the principles and procedures of applied behavior analysis (ABA). Our intensive program is for infants, children, and adolescents who have not made progress in outpatient feeding therapy or whose disorder is causing medical emergencies. The approach is highly successful and children in programs that use this approach meet 90% of their treatment goals.

✨Introducing a new inpatient program: The Inpatient Tube Weaning Program! 🍎🥦

This is a 3-week acute inpatient rehabilitation admission focused on medically supervised tube weaning and intensive feeding therapy provided by speech pathology, occupational therapy, and psychology. The program is for children who have had a feeding tube long-term, and have made minimal progress in outpatient feeding therapy.

“We’re really happy with the progress she’s made! She’s done really well and we’re excited to see what’s to come in outpatient” – Hisana’s mom.

Your child might be a fit for this program if:
• Feeding tube dependent for a long time
• Recent outpatient feeding therapy (at least 2 months) and hasn’t been able to
wean tube feedings yet
• Caregiver’s ability to stay in the hospital with child for the 3-week stay
• GI doctor has cleared your child to begin tube weaning
• Ability to safely swallow liquid and solids (puree or chewable)

Early intervention can make a big difference in a child’s development.💙

Children’s Specialized Hospital Early Intervention Program is a state and federally funded program that provides early identification, evaluation, and intervention for children from birth to three years of age. Children are eligible for early intervention services if they show a measurable developmental delay or have a diagnosed condition that has a high probability of impairing normal development.

The program provides the following services based on the identified needs of the family and child:
• Developmental Intervention: a specialized service that focuses on a child’s global development rather than a single specific skill
• Speech therapy
• Occupational therapy
• Physical therapy
• Nursing supports
• Social work
• Family training
• Vision and Hearing

Features of the Early Intervention Program:
• Promotes social, cognitive, language, and physical development through a variety of fun, but educational and therapeutic activities
• Is delivered in the child's natural environment, such as their home, child care, or community settings
• Provides parent/caregiver training and participation in EIP sessions
• Provides parent support services (if needed)

If you’re concerned about your child's development, a comprehensive early intervention evaluation is recommended. Evaluations are conducted by a two person team and are provided at no cost to patients/families. No referral or doctor recommendation is necessary.
