Mr. Bruner's Cancer Journey

Mr. Bruner's Cancer Journey "It's All Good"

05/19/2026

With a greatful and thankful heart there is no extreme update except to say that we are enjoying “normal” life over the past year. Mr. Bruner just finished his online school year with Veritas Press and plans on teaching there again next year. He also just had his second to last infusion as part of the cancer treatment and numbers still look good. I’m not exactly sure what is next with the cancer treatment after he finishes the infusions besides monitoring bloodwork and enjoying the days we are given. These beautiful days seemed impossibly far away to picture when I first started this page to update and request prayer warriors. That’s why it’s called faith; if we knew how everything would work out when we were going through the darkness, then it wouldn’t be dark. But for those who know Jesus, we have assurance that even in the midst of the darkness He is in control and is our Light. Often we can’t see much more than one step ahead, but He promises to give us what we need at the exact time we need it and is so faithful to deliver. I’m praying for anyone reading this who is currently in a dark place that Jesus will give you comfort and reassurance.

Praises:
-Mr. Bruner is enjoying having more time to spend playing games and going on outings with his grandkids.
-Mrs. Bruner’s health concerns over the past year are stablizing. Both Mr. and Mrs. were on oral antibiotics for pneumonia this winter.

Prayer Requests:
-Continued health and strength.
-Opportunities to encourage others.

Thank you to everyone who has prayed over the years.

A few weeks ago the kids and I were out in Colton picking blueberries and I looped by the high school to show the kids where Mr. Bruner used to teach and I spent many hours of my childhood. It’s kinda funny to think that most people only remember the small high school with its one main hall as the place they spent their teenage schooling years, had crushes and relationships, and high school drama and struggles. For me it holds so many more memories. Mr. Bruner would take us girls out there on weekends when he was grading to give mom some time to herself. He’d sometimes make us microwave popcorn and we’d eat it on coffee filters sitting at the desks watching some psychology movie that wasn’t too weird (Driving Miss Daisy and Remember the Titans). More often he would grab a few dodgeballs from the gym and let us bounce or kick them down the hall. We’d race the halls, play hide and seek and maybe peek in the scary bathroom! (We always used the teachers’ one that was well lit at the end of the hall). Whenever Mr. Bruner needed to go to a different part of the building he would call us and we’d run to join him, either to the library for copies, the office for more coffee, or maybe the gym or football field for a play break with Dad. 😊 I could literally walk through almost every room, closet and corner of the high school campus in my mind and have some memory pop up.
It was also fun to take science classes at the high school from Mr. Bruner and watch his school persona in action. Recently Mr. Bruner did a teaching at church, and I was smiling at all the “Bruner-isms” (“the thing I find fascinating is…” “I am watching the clock,” “you might want to jot this down,” etc). It’s been a while since I heard him teaching. If you are nostalgic, or just interested the link is below. 😊 Also the topic was really thought provoking about words and the power they have to bring life or death.

Praises:
-General good health for Mr. Bruner and healing for Mrs. Bruner from some health issues this spring and summer.
-Another 9 months (since last writing) of memories, pictures, and encouragement from family being together.

Prayers:
-That God’s will is being done in our lives and we are good stewards of this additional time on earth.
-Continued good lab work and tests for Mr. Bruner.

Thank you all for continued prayer. I have thought of writing updates frequently, but life has continued without me actually doing so. But as often as I think of it prayers go up of thanks for everyone who has read one of these posts and for the community we have.

Early on in this journey, I unfortunately knew what to say because there was a lot to say. Now, for the time being, there is not a lot to say. Life is almost back to “normal” for Mr. Bruner, with more naps, some “puny” days, every couple months infusions and a daily chemo pill. He is teaching again this year at Veritas Press with a full class load and precepting some student teachers from George Fox University. My parents watch the grandkids on Mondays and great fun is had by all. It is so enriching in my kids lives to have the grandparents and aunties involved and so many precious memories are being made. All three kids had their first extended sleepover at “Oma and Papa’s” for 3 nights and it wasn’t long enough. 🙂

Praises:
-For normal life without hospitals (but very thankful they are there when needed).
-For each day that the Lord has given us.
-For more time to make memories.

Prayer Requests:
-Continued remission and no reoccurrence of the cancer!
-Continued health through the winter and holiday season and no severe bugs for Mr. Bruner

As so many have experienced before us, we are enjoying life experiences with an extra gratitude for each day since Mr. Bruner’s diagnosis. 4th of July was spent at the parade with the grandkids and then watching fireworks with neighbors (long naps required since it was a week after the pneumonia). Their 36th anniversary came quietly in mid-July. Many peaceful afternoons just hanging out at my parents place with the grandkids and enjoying time together. They recently got a porch swing hung up that Dad (Mr. Bruner) made for Mom many years ago. Taking lot of pictures and making memories for the kiddos.

Praises:
-Mr. Bruner seems to have recovered fully from the pneumonia and says he feels better than he had in the preceding months (note: don’t ignore persistent coughs when someone is immunocompromised :/)
-Mr. Bruner and family had an opportunity to host a Veritas student for a few days last week and they all enjoyed the time.
-Mr. Bruner is able to fully serve at church again (playing piano and teaching on occasion). Here is the link to the teaching he did last Sunday for anyone who wants to hear a bit of his story and background.

***Update 6/29 at 4pm Mr Bruner is home on oral antibiotics. He texted me “home never looked so good.” So here’s to recovering with mom’s good cooking (definitely not a fan of hospital food!). Thank you all for praying.

Several days ago Mr. Bruner asked me if I was going to do another update. I said, “yes, I should, but there isn’t much to report.” He said, “sometimes that is good (and something in Latin that I forgot, but it meant status quo).” Unfortunately, now I have something to report. Mr. Bruner has been battling a lingering cough for several months. We couldn’t tell if it was remaining from several colds he’s had this spring, or a side effect from the oral chemo pill he is on. But yesterday he finally went into urgent care for extreme lethargy and chills, and they sent him to the hospital, and he is admitted for a few days for pneumonia and sepsis. After some fluids and IV antibiotics he is feeling better, but still has a ways to go.

Praises:
-It’s been more than a year since Mr. Bruner had to be in the hospital!
-He got moved this morning from the ER into an actual room so that is more comfortable.
-Mom is the best support and has been there almost the whole time except coming home to sleep last night.

Prayer Requests:
-That Mr. Bruner would recover well and quickly from this infection and be able to enjoy his summer break!
-That the rest of the family would stay healthy as well (especially the grandkiddos - little germ-magnets that they are).
-That this would be another opportunity for Mr. Bruner to interact with people he otherwise would not.

Thank you all for the continued prayers!
