After nearly 20 years as a board-certified allergist and immunologist, Dr. Doug Jones is entering a new chapter as Medical Director at the Bateman Horne Center.
In this episode of The Immune Edit, Doug explains why this move matters and how it connects to the bigger mission of the podcast: caring for people whose biology doesn’t fit neatly into the boxes medicine has built.
He talks about the intersection of ME/CFS, Long COVID, POTS, dysautonomia, mast cell disorders, and other complex chronic illnesses—and why overlapping symptoms don’t necessarily mean one diagnosis or one mechanism explains everything.
Doug also shares his vision for bringing clinical care, research, education, access, and technology closer together. Along the way, he discusses why uncertainty should never become an excuse for dismissal, why “I don’t know” can be the beginning of a research question, and why the goal isn’t to find one treatment that fits everyone, but the approach that fits the individual.
Most importantly, he returns to a question from a patient that has stayed with him for more than a decade:
“Am I just the wrong kind of sick?”
The answer—and the work ahead—is about building a healthcare system where patients don’t have to fit perfectly into a box to be heard, understood, and cared for.
