You need your eyes checked!

September is a great reminder that healthy aging includes taking care of your vision, too! As we get older, our risk for age-related eye conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease can increase; sometimes without obvious symptoms at first.

A routine dilated eye exam can help detect changes early and protect the vision you depend on every day.

Behind the Blur: BRVO + Macular Edema 👁️

A Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion (BRVO) happens when a small vein in the retina becomes blocked, causing blood and fluid to back up. This can lead to retinal hemorrhages, swelling, and leakage.

When fluid collects in the macula—the area responsible for sharp central vision—it causes macular edema, which may lead to blurred, distorted, or hazy vision.

These images also show changes that may be seen with diabetic retinopathy, including retinal hemorrhages and vascular damage.

🩺 Common risk factors: high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, vascular disease, glaucoma, and age.

Treatment may include anti-VEGF injections, steroids, laser therapy, or close monitoring depending on severity. The goal is to reduce swelling, preserve vision, and prevent further damage.

❤️ Controlling your blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol, avoiding smoking, and keeping regular medical appointments can help lower your risk.

Most importantly, don’t wait for vision changes. Retinal disease can develop before symptoms appear. If you have diabetes, hypertension, or other vascular risk factors, a yearly dilated eye exam—or more often if recommended—is an important part of protecting your sight.

One should be caught early… the other should be eaten early. 😌
Glaucoma can quietly damage your vision before you notice symptoms, so routine eye exams matter. Guacamole, however, is a different kind of emergency. 😂
