Mental Health Awareness Month hits different this year. Not because the work is heavier or my clients are harder. It is because *I* am different.

There is something that happens when a therapist stops performing wellness and starts actually practicing it. When you stop white-knuckling your way through the sacred weight of this work and start letting the soil of your own life get tilled. That is where I am right now.

I have leaned into my plant mama era like it is a spiritual discipline, because for me, it is. I have leaned on God differently, not as a last resort but as a first posture. I have let my tribe love on me with both hands open, and I have loved them back the same way. Fully. Without apology.

Being a Black woman Christian therapist is one of the most beautiful and most costly callings I know. I lived through many Mental Health Awareness Months before this one. But this year I am not just surviving the month. I am bearing fruit in it.

If you do the work on others, you owe it to yourself, and to them, to do the work too.

And somebody needs to hear this: check on your strong friends. Check on your friends who hold space for everyone else all day long. We are not exempt from needing to be seen.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

But awareness was never the destination.

The green ribbons matter. The conversations matter. And then June comes, and the people who were hurting in May are still hurting... just with less company.

Here is what is worth saying out loud this month: seeking therapy is not a failure of faith. It is stewardship. God created human beings with complex minds, nervous systems, and emotional lives. The Psalms are full of David crying from the depths. Elijah collapsed under a tree and told God he was done (1 Kings 19). Jesus wept. Emotional pain in Scripture is not incidental; it is instructive.

You were never meant to white-knuckle your way through life and call it trust.

Mental health is not a permanent state of peace you achieve after enough prayer or enough work. It is the ongoing practice of tending to yourself. For many of the women I work with, it does not arrive dramatically. It looks like fatigue that sleep does not fix. Resentment that surfaces with people you love. The inability to sit still without guilt.

Those are not weaknesses. They are signals. And signals deserve a response.

Your mental health does not observe a calendar. It needs attention in September, in January, on every ordinary Tuesday when you are running on empty.

If this month moves you to finally make the call, let it. The healing is not out of reach. It is waiting on the other side of one honest step.

Where rest becomes fruit.

43 looks like two nights in San Diego with my twin sister and absolutely no agenda.

No clients. No chapters. No deadlines. Just sand, salt air, and the kind of laughter that only a person who has known you since before you took your first breath can offer.

I talk a lot about rest as a clinical and spiritual discipline. I write about it. I teach it. But rest only becomes fruit when you actually practice it, when you put it in the soil of your real life and let it take root.

The beginning of the week was that for me.

43 is not a number I am shrinking from. It is a marker of ground covered, roots deepened, and harvest still coming.

To every woman reading this who has been giving, producing, and holding — may you find your San Diego. May you find your person. May you rest without guilt and rise without apology.

Where rest becomes fruit.

April has been set aside for stress awareness, but if we are being honest, nobody had to tell us that Black women are stressed. We have been living it, naming it, managing it, and somehow still being expected to show up fully for everyone else while our own weight quietly accumulates.

This is not a clinical breakdown. It is a mirror.

Four dimensions of stress show up consistently in the lives of Black women at the intersection of race, gender, faith, and a world that demands too much and replenishes too little: physical, psychological, spiritual, and social. Your body is keeping score. Your mind is running the overtime shift. Your faith sometimes feels like one more obligation. And your relationships are costing you more than they are restoring.

You are not weak for being worn down. But you were not created to stay there either.

The same God who said, "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden" (Matthew 11:28) did not design you to white-knuckle every season. Rest is not a reward for finishing. It is the very ground from which fruit grows.

Swipe through. Name what you see. And take one honest step toward tending the ground you are standing on.

🌿Drop a number in the comments that names where you are feeling it most:

3 for spiritual
4 for social
