Only 1.5 weeks into my speed training and have already added 9 miles per hour club head speed. Much more than I was expecting this quick. Not playing much golf to this point has contributed as I was detrained giving me room to improve, but also switching phases in the weightroom to more rate of force development work, and intentional fast swings. I expect gains to be much harder from here on.

Flexibility just like strength takes time. For strength we want recovery days but to improve flexibility we want consistency. Try to get it in most days and remember to not push through pain.

Not my best session but was messing with a few swing thoughts that didn’t seem to help speed anyway. Try again Saturday with a ball. 109 mph same as my ball speed earlier this week. Back to thinking less and swinging hard next session.

Shoulder mobility is important for healthy shoulders. Spending more time working on my mobility as I age. This is a simple test to see if you have restrictions.

As part of my golf swing speed goals for the next 8 weeks I’ve shifted my workout focus from a base strength phase to a rate of force development phase. Faster movement with less volume to manage fatigue to maximize my fast swings, med ball throws, jumps.

Going to spend the next 8 weeks working on improving clubhead speed. Starting at 109 without much golf and just general lifting for the year. Shifting my workout priority to rate of force development and speed focus along with some fast driver swings with and without the ball. Hopefully a range session a few days a week but don’t always have time.

I think a lot of golf fitness markets to buy in and exercises to fix swing faults. In my opinion we should use our gym time efficiently to maximize our physical capabilities and that in turn can make swing changes easier but the exercise itself likely won’t fix your swing. And one obvious benefit to doing the basics and enhancing our physical capabilities is more distance which almost all of us could benefit from.

I often hear from golfers over 40 they are afraid to start working on increasing club head speed due to injury risk. Either themselves or someone they know got injured trying. That’s where working with someone one on one who understands exercise progression can help not only reduce your risk of injury but build more resilient golfers.

I think in general physical therapy does a good job calming pain but getting active people back to the demands of their life requires more than that.

Most golf fitness consists of lifting and swinging fast but we can learn from other sports and incorporating a good program with different goals at different phases can help you maximize your potential and lead to more speed.
