NUTRITION TIPS FOR CANCER PATIENTS

Cancer patients undergoing radiation treatment and chemotherapy experience side effects which can result in loss of appetite or irregular eating habits. Because of this, many cancer patients lose key nutrition needed.

Nausea or loss of appetite is often prevalent to people suffering from this deadly illness. It is best to take a couple of small meals during the day rather than having a large meal or two that may be hard to digest. Frequent eating is also suggested to ward off hunger that nauseous cancer patients usually experience.

While cancer patients have their respective choice on food that to them is easier to eat, a cold and soft meal like pudding, fruit cups, and applesauce may sit better. Rice, noodles, crackers that are also common with hot, spicy and a little greasy food possessing strong smells can likely result in nausea. They are also difficult to digest.

Foods with high protein and calcium content and can help cancer patients obtain the daily required nutrients without having too much are best for cancer patients. Examples of this type of foods are peanut butter, string cheese, cottage cheese, and full-fat dairy yogurt.
