EBOLA CRISIS: MORE THAN 6,000 INFECTED IN CONGO

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing the largest Ebola outbreak in its history.

As of August 31, 6,041 people have been infected and 2,911 have died — nearly half of all confirmed patients.

The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, for which there is currently no specifically approved vaccine or treatment. The virus has already spread across six provinces.

Behind every number is a person, a family and a community changed forever.

This tragedy reminds us of a painful truth: when a dangerous virus is discovered too late, every lost day gives it another opportunity to spread.

A simple nose clip may help reduce the risk of infection from the rare “brain-eating amoeba,” according to the New York State Department of Health.

Naegleria fowleri can live in warm freshwater, including lakes, ponds, rivers, and hot springs. Infection can occur when contaminated water enters the nose, allowing the amoeba to travel to the brain and cause primary amebic meningoencephalitis—a rare but almost always fatal disease.

To reduce the risk:

• Use a nose clip or hold your nose when diving into freshwater.
• Keep your head above water in hot springs.
• For nasal or sinus rinsing, use only distilled, sterile, or previously boiled water.

The infection is not caused by swallowing contaminated water.

Type 2 Diabetes Is Rising Alarmingly Among Young Americans

New U.S. research shows a dramatic shift in a disease once associated primarily with middle and older age.

In Colorado, the rate of newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes among people under 20 has increased nearly tenfold since 2002, according to research being presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes Annual Meeting.

The findings are particularly concerning because youth-onset type 2 diabetes can progress aggressively and lead to serious complications at a younger age. The American Diabetes Association also reports that type 2 diabetes among children and adolescents has continued to increase over the past two decades.

This is more than a statistic. It is a warning about the growing burden of chronic disease on the next generation — and another reminder of the importance of prevention, screening and early diagnosis.
