Happy Wellness Wednesday

The garden is in!
And it’s got me thinking…

There is something deeply nourishing about eating with the season.

When we choose local, seasonal fruits and vegetables, we are often choosing produce that was picked closer to peak ripeness, traveled a shorter distance, and arrived on our plate with more freshness, flavor, color, and nutrients.

From a heart-health perspective, this matters.

Fruits and vegetables are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients that support blood pressure, cholesterol balance, blood vessel health, digestion, inflammation reduction, and overall longevity.

And nature has such a beautiful rhythm.

In the Northeast and nearby regions, this time of year brings us a wonderful variety of fresh, seasonal options, including:

🍓 Strawberries
🍒 Cherries
🌱 Asparagus
🥬 Arugula, spinach, kale, Swiss chard, and other leafy greens
🫛 Snap peas and shelling peas
🌿 Fresh herbs
🥕 Radishes
🌰 Beets
🥦 Broccoli
🥬 Cabbage
🧅 Scallions and spring onions
🥒 Early cucumbers
🥬 Bok choy and other tender greens
🍄 Mushrooms*

If you are lucky enough to have a garden, this is such a beautiful time to eat what you grow.

And if you do not have your own garden, visiting a local farmer’s market is a wonderful way to support the farmers in your community while filling your kitchen with beautiful, nourishing food.

It does not have to be complicated.

Add berries to your breakfast.
Toss fresh greens into your lunch.
Roast beets or asparagus with dinner.
Keep snap peas or radishes ready for a crunchy snack.
Try one new vegetable from the farmer’s market this week.

Small, seasonal choices add up.

Your body notices.
Your heart notices.
Your community notices.

If you are feeling overwhelmed by all the nutrition advice out there and would like support creating heart-healthy habits that actually fit your life, I invite you to schedule a free call with me at https://wellnessflame.as.me/schedule.php

We can explore what is possible, one realistic step at a time.

Ignite Your Health • Fuel Your Purpose • Shine Your Light

*Seasonal list is aligned with June produce availability in Massachusetts/New England and nearby Mid-Atlantic/Northeast guides.

Happy Wellness Wednesday

I spent a good chunk of this past weekend turning over our garden and tending to the health of the soil. Gardening is something that simultaneously grounds me to the past and inspires hope for the future.

The past is reflected in the memories of Dad sowing his garden every year when I was growing up…and the many hours my brothers and I spent weeding that very same garden. Of course, we would have rather been riding bikes, climbing trees or playing kickball with friends. I can still see Mom blanching, packing and freezing the volumes of veggies that were harvested and would nourish us most of the way through the coming winter.

Going further back into family history, my father grew up on a farm in CT, where he, my grandfather, grandmother and aunt worked tirelessly to produce almost everything that the family ate year round. My father jokes about spending most of his childhood with his head on the side of a cow. It was his job, before school every day, to milk the cows in the barn. This milk was for drinking, baking and making homemade butter. My grandmother used to trade milk and fresh eggs for the flour, sugar and coffee that they weren’t able to produce on the farm.

Inspiration for the future comes after time and muscle-aching effort are spent in the garden. It takes the shape of hope and the imagined vision of what will be harvested in the coming weeks and months. As Dad has always said, “There is no store-bought tomato that comes even close to the taste of one from the garden.”

I look forward to the health-enhancing dishes we will create from what we sow this year…and, later, defrosting the Swiss Chard and savoring the flavor of summer as the frigid wind howls from the north next winter.

But for now, I just want to be in this moment and enjoy the juxtaposition of being grounded in the past and hopeful for the future. It’s an intriguing suspension and flow of time.

What about you? What lessons from the past inspire your healthy future? DM me and share your story. I’d love to hear it.

Happy Wellness Wednesday

The Slip That Said It All

I was sitting in a meeting recently when someone meant to say “wellness”…

…but what came out was “hellness.”

And honestly?

It may have been the most accurate health assessment I have heard in a while.

Because for many high-capacity, successful people, the pursuit of wealth can quietly turn into a state of hellness.

The calendar is full.
The inbox is overflowing.
The responsibilities are endless.
The nervous system is running a marathon while the body is sitting in a chair.

Meals are rushed. Sleep is negotiated. Exercise becomes “when things calm down.”

And stress? Stress gets treated like an unavoidable side effect of success, or worse yet…like the not-so-new “normal.”

Until the body starts sending memos.

Blood pressure creeps up.
Cholesterol numbers shift.
Sleep becomes less restorative.
Energy fades.
The chest tightens.
The joy gets harder to access.

And suddenly, the question becomes:

What is the point of building wealth if it costs you your wellness?

Now, please do not misunderstand me. I am not against success, ambition, leadership, or financial stability.

Not even a little.

But as a cardiac nurse and holistic health & longevity coach, I have seen what happens when people spend decades building a beautiful life they are too exhausted, stressed, or unwell to fully enjoy.

That is where “wealth and hellness” becomes a powerful little wake-up call.

True wealth is not just what is in your accounts.

It is also having the energy to enjoy your life.
The strength to move through your day.
The clarity to make good decisions.
The resilience to handle stress.
The time to connect with the people you love.
The health to keep showing up for what matters most.

Your wellness is not a luxury item you add later.

It is the foundation that allows you to actually live the life you are working so hard to create.

So the next time you find yourself sacrificing your body, your sleep, your peace, your relationships, or your joy in the name of success, pause and ask yourself:

Am I building wealth… or am I accidentally living in hellness?

And if that question lands a little too close to home, you do not have to figure it out alone.

I help high-capacity people with concerns about their heart health create realistic lifestyle strategies that fit their real lives — so they can protect their health, restore their energy, and live with more purpose, presence, and joy.

Because the goal is not just to succeed.

The goal is to be well enough to enjoy the life you have worked so hard to build.

If you are ready to move from hellness back toward wellness, I would be honored to walk beside you.

Happy Wellness Wednesday

Last week, for Lifestyle Medicine Week, we explored the 6 Pillars of Lifestyle Medicine.

I find that most of my clients already know most of this information. The hard part is translating knowledge into daily habits, especially when life is busy.

This is where the negative self-talk lives.

It hides in the spaces between our words.
It shows up as, “I should know better.”
Or, “Why can’t I just get this right?”

I see it often in deep coaching conversations.

Brilliant, capable, compassionate humans carrying private stories they’ve never said out loud.

Stories about health choices they regret. Patterns they feel stuck in. Diagnoses that changed how they see themselves. Stress they think they “should” be able to handle.

And underneath it all?
Shame.

Here’s what I’ve learned as a nurse and health & longevity coach:

Shame cannot survive being met with compassion.

When someone is truly seen…
When they are heard without interruption…
When they are held in a space that is steady, confidential, and free of judgment…

Something shifts.

Shoulders soften.
Breath deepens.
The nervous system settles.

And then the real work can begin.

Because once that inner critic loosens its grip, clarity emerges.

Instead of:
“I’m so bad at this.”
We hear:
“I didn’t have the tools.”

Instead of:
“I’ve ruined my health.”
We hear:
“I’m ready to take care of myself differently now.”

That is transformation.

Not through pressure.
Not through criticism.
Not through fear.

But through safe connection.

As a nurse, I am trained to care for people in their most vulnerable moments.

As a coach, I create a safe space for people to hear themselves clearly — sometimes for the first time.

There is extraordinary power in being non-judgmentally held.

When shame dissolves, responsibility doesn’t disappear — it becomes empowered. Choice becomes possible. Energy returns. Hope feels real.

And from that place, sustainable change happens.

If you’ve been carrying something quietly — about your health, your habits, your stress, your past — know this:

You were never meant to carry it alone.

Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is allow yourself to be seen.

When you are ready, I am here to help.

Evidence-based advice is to avoid all risky substances, as any exposure increases risk for chronic disease and accidents.

For people struggling with dependency or addiction, appropriate treatment, counseling and support ARE helpful and can make a big difference.

Please seek support, so you can enjoy the healthy life you desire. Some resources to get started are:

the Recovery Centers of America. Their number is (855) 980-1134.
