Retina Labs recently had the privilege of participating in 5th Grade Career Day at Skano Elementary School where Jennifer Law, one of our Albany-based Retinal Imaging Technologists, introduced students to careers in healthcare, ophthalmology, and diagnostic imaging.

As part of the event, Jennifer shared her personal career journey and discussed how education, curiosity, & perseverance can open doors to rewarding opportunities in healthcare. Students also had the chance to see our portable retinal imaging camera in action, which is the same technology Jennifer uses to perform in-home diabetic eye exam screenings for health plan members.

The interactive demonstration gave students a firsthand look at how retinal imaging technology helps identify signs of diabetic eye disease and other vision-threatening conditions, highlighting the important role preventive screenings play in supporting early detection and better health outcomes.

We recognize the importance of investing in future generations by helping students explore careers in healthcare, and we are proud to have dedicated team members like Jennifer who represent Retina Labs while inspiring the next generation of healthcare leaders.

When it comes to preventing vision loss from diabetic eye disease, early detection remains critical for health plan members living with diabetes.

Unfortunately, many members still face access-to-care barriers related to transportation, mobility, and scheduling challenges that prevent them from completing their annual diabetic eye exams.

In our latest member success story, Tawanna shares how a convenient in-home diabetic eye exam helped identify severe diabetic retinopathy before her condition progressed further.

Because of her mobility and transportation concerns, accessing traditional clinic-based care was often difficult for Tawanna. By bringing this screening directly to her home, Tawanna was able to connect with a retina specialist sooner and begin vision-saving treatment before further vision deterioration occurred.

Her story highlights the broader impact that accessible, member-centric care delivery models can have on quality improvement initiatives by increasing screening completion rates, enabling earlier intervention, and supporting closed-loop care coordination.

Click the link below to read Tawanna's full story and learn how proactive outreach and in-home diabetic eye exam screenings can help more members receive the timely care they need while aligning with your health plan's quality improvement goals.

In a recent Heart of Hamlin podcast episode published by our friends at the Lincoln County Health Dept WV, Retina Labs' very own Director of Operations, Brandon Condiff, shares why routine diabetic eye exams are critical when it comes to protecting long-term vision health and improving access to care, especially in rural and underserved communities.

Diabetic retinopathy, which is the leading cause of preventable blindness among working-age adults in the U.S., remains one of the most serious and common complications of diabetes.

Given its notorious reputation for silent disease progression, diabetic retinopathy often develops without showing any noticeable symptoms until it has reached an advanced stage. When detected early, however, up to 95% of cases involving diabetes-related vision loss can be successfully prevented through prompt treatment.

Compared to routine vision checks, the diabetic eye exam retinal imaging process has the capability to uncover various incidental findings beyond diabetic retinopathy alone, where retina specialists may also see early signs of:
*Glaucoma
*Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
*Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)

By expanding access to diabetic eye exams for all health plan members regardless of demographics, Retina Labs is helping more people protect their eyesight - one preventive screening at a time.

Retina Labs’ mission to help health plans close critical preventive care gaps for their members in-home starts with the people delivering that care on the front lines.

Few embody our mission better than Alexis Hayes, one of our highly trained Retinal Imaging Technologists whose personal connection to diabetes care management and passion for serving her community helps further our health plan clients' quality improvement goals.

Growing up in West Virginia, she saw firsthand how chronic disease progression combined with limited access to care affected families and her surrounding communities.

Alexis’ father, who lived with an advanced stage of diabetes, helped maintain his vision health by staying consistent with his recommended annual eye exams - an exam that Alexis now performs for others in her current role:

“Early detection made all the difference for my dad. Knowing that motivates me every single day on the job to give other families that same chance to preserve their eyesight.”

Alexis continues to play a pivotal role in expanding access to preventive care within rural communities while building the necessary trust that ultimately leads to meaningful, member-centric care delivery experiences.

Through dedicated and compassionate team members like Alexis, Retina Labs continues to drive measurable value for our health plan clients and their members – one in-home preventive care screening visit at a time.

Join us in recognizing Alexis for her mission-driven approach to positively shaping better health outcomes for members within the communities she serves!

Retina Labs is proud to highlight our ongoing partnership with Wellpoint West Virginia through the continued expansion of our comprehensive diabetic eye exam and A1C screening programs designed to help close critical HEDIS gaps in care measures for their Medicaid members across the state.

West Virginia has the highest rate of diabetes in the United States, with approximately 15% of adults aged 18 or older diagnosed as diabetics, a rate that is nearly double the national average.

Given the longstanding access-to-care challenges the state's rural communities have historically faced, Wellpoint West Virginia utilized a member-centric care delivery model that combines community health fair events with in-home visits to bring preventive screenings directly to their members resulting in:

*Increased completion rates for key preventive screening services
*Improved care access for members facing transportation or mobility barriers
*Delivered meaningful clinical insights & stronger care coordination
*Drove measurable HEDIS performance improvements & member satisfaction

We’re honored to work alongside Wellpoint West Virginia to advance health equity and support early disease detection while ensuring that preventive care delivery is made more accessible and convenient for their members.
