My client Lupo flies from Austin, TX to Nashville 1-3 times a year to get tattooed all day long.

At this point we have a little ritual of pre planning all of the designs and their placements and when he shows-up I have my machines set-up, drinks in the fridge, and the stencils all laid-out. Then at the end of the day, we tend to eat Pinky Ring pizza. It’s a great time!

Not only is Lupo an avid reader of Sci-Fi like myself, but a fellow world traveler, really smart, a kind soul, movie buff, and a generally curious person. I think that’s why we get along so well! We never ever run out of stuff to chat about during these 7 hour sessions. It’s the best! 🤓🎬

Pretty crazy too but, at his request, I’m going to do a true-to-life-sized watercolor rendering of his finished sleeve with all of the tattoos to come! Since we already know pretty much every design and where it’s going from here on out, I technically could start it now 😎

Some years ago, my friend Alex came to me with a crazy idea. Before he had really figured out his own style, he had gotten a bunch of black & gray tattoos on his right arm. His left arm we had done completely in full-color American Traditional.

His crazy idea was to join the two sleeves together through his chest piece with Athena and Zeus! 🌊

It was tricky to design everything, but the key was the bolt of lightning shown on the last slide in detail. This one bolt of lightning visually separated the two sides. I had to do a full color study in advance of this piece just to make sure that the idea would work visually. If you look carefully, I included just a tiny bit of color in Athena as well to make it feel cohesive 🖼️

Anyway, that’s a little backstory behind this piece. Wherever you are Alex, I hope you’re doing great! Thank you for trusting me with your wild idea! ❤️‍🔥

These days I’ve been trying to include more spontaneity when I tattoo and paint. When I first got an iPad and started using Procreate I feel like it really hamstrung me. I felt like I needed to plan everything out. Since then, I’ve gone through phases of planning everything and planning nothing!

For this sheet, I knew I wanted to use certain colors so to balance it with the spontaneity, I refined my designs in the iPad and laid them out the way I wanted on the flash sheet. Then I did all of the black by hand, just shooting from the hip. Then later, I took a picture of it and dropped it into Procreate and planned-out my colors 📲

This has been my favorite flow thus far. I feel like this way, my paintings reach their highest potential and I’m happy with the end result without feeling like I’m just performing logistics the whole time 🤣

Out of all of these, I would especially like the Tattoo the guy in the bottom, right hand corner!

My good friend Lupo flies out from Austin, Texas to Nashville 1-3 times a year to get tattooed ALL DAY!🤯

We’ve done all kinds of crazy pieces over the years on him (I’ve actually been tattooing him for almost 10 years now!) but he had kept his right arm BLANK the whole time.

After much deliberation, he decided that he wanted a super classic looking right arm with some contemporary counterpoint of Eastern art AND pop culture in there as well. 🚗🚙

In order to get to this place where I was well-prepared for him to fly-in and get tattooed all day, we had a 20-30 minute conversation where I suggested some classics in specific areas.

In the end, we totally met in the middle and had a blast! 💥

Out of all of the Godzilla movies I think I like “Godzilla Vs. Megalon” the best. Not only does it have Godzilla, but it also has Jet Jaguar who looks so cool, and then there is the underground society of Seatopia AND the Seatopians get help from aliens to bring Gigan in from space to stop the nuclear testing. What a wild ride!!🌊🐲🇯🇵
