🏈 HCA Healthcare stroke survivor Derrel Kelley grew up on the football field. By 24, he had become a star running back at a Texas University before returning home to Florida to train for the NFL Combine. But after noticing pain in his leg during practice and pushing through it, his life changed when he woke up from a nap the next day unable to move the right side of his body.

His mother, Buffie, called 911 when she found him collapsed at the top of the stairs unable to move or speak. First responders took him to 🏥HCA Florida Northside Hospital, Pinellas County’s first comprehensive stroke center.

Doctors discovered life-threatening blood clots in both of his lungs, with some traveling to his brain and causing an ischemic stroke. After emergency surgery to remove both clots, Derrel began his recovery — regaining movement, walking and speech before returning home. As his mother shared, “They saved my baby. They really did.”

A stroke can happen at any age, and every second matters. Learn more about Derrel’s recovery journey and how HCA Healthcare is helping deliver faster stroke care — 45% faster than the national benchmark for stroke treatment: https://bit.ly/4a2Zfjr.

Madyson “Maddy” Smith and Bart Hansen first connected as nurses at HCA Healthcare’s Lone Peak Hospital in Draper, Utah, united by a shared commitment to caring for patients. 💙

Their connection grew during night shifts on the medical-surgical unit, where they supported one another personally and professionally through meaningful career milestones. Maddy earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing through HCA Healthcare’s partnership with Galen College of Nursing, and Bart received a DAISY Award for compassionate patient care.

Shortly after Maddy’s graduation, Bart proposed and later the couple married, embracing a fitting tagline for their story: “All because two nurses fell in love.”

Today, Maddy and Bart continue caring for patients together at St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, while building a life rooted in the same purpose that brought them together.

At HCA Healthcare, nurses see what patients need every day. Sometimes, a simple question at the bedside can lead to a better way to care for patients.

That idea was at the heart of HCA Healthcare’s second annual Nursing Research Day, hosted with Galen College of Nursing. Nurses, students, faculty and leaders came together to share research inspired by real patient care experiences — from improving workflows to finding new ways to support safer care.

With more than 100,000 nurses across HCA Healthcare, these ideas have the potential to make a meaningful difference for patients and care teams across the country.

🤝 During April’s We Show Up for Our Communities days of service initiative, nearly 9,800 HCA Healthcare colleagues dedicated more than 41,800 volunteer hours to support 1,866 nonprofit organizations nationwide — demonstrating the impact we can make when we come together to serve our communities.

“Caring for our communities is at the heart of HCA Healthcare,” said Virginia Tenpenny, vice president of community engagement at HCA Healthcare and president of the HCA Healthcare Foundation. “’We Show Up for Our Communities’ reflects the strong commitment our colleagues have to serving others, not only in our hospitals, but also in the neighborhoods where we live and work.”

From supporting food banks and schools to serving local nonprofits focused on health, education and basic needs, colleagues across the country gave their time and expertise during National Volunteer Month. In HCA Healthcare’s hometown of Nashville alone, nearly 3,000 colleagues contributed almost 13,500 volunteer hours across the city.
