To commemorate 50 years of PDI, every week we will posting a story from people throughout our communities. 50 stories for 50 years, to show how much PDI has grown into what it is today.

Before PDI, there was The Smiles Center. The Center’s mission was to serve adults with intellectual disabilities in the Clarksville Tennessee area. The center provided day services to the original 8 individuals whose families founded the concept in 1976. The Smiles Center was later changed to Progressive Directions Inc. in 1978.

Which brings us to our first story in our series, given to us by Doug Barber, First Director of The Smiles Center.

Today we celebrate 50 years of Progressive Directions! Established in 1976, PDI has impacted many lives. Whether it's the people we support, those who choose to dedicate their lives to our cause, or the community around us.

Over these 50 years, PDI has grown from serving 8 people in Montgomery County to now over 1,000 throughout 13 counties. Today we offer services from birth to end of life, such as Early Intervention, Supported Employment, Community Integration, Enabling Technology, Residential, and MedRes programs. At our Common Ground Cafe we are able to train people with disabilities for success in the workforce, and we're proud to promote physical activity and social skills development with Buddy Ball Special Needs Athletic League.

PDI continues to strive for excellence, focusing on person-centered services that build pride, dignity, and independence for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
