Constant sun exposure, even with sunscreen, can be risky for transplant recipients. The anti-rejection medications we take suppress our immune systems, which reduces our body’s ability to detect and destroy abnormal cells. Because of this, transplant patients have a much higher risk of developing skin cancer, including melanoma. That’s why sun protection isn’t just recommended for us, it’s essential. This birthday feels different. 💗
Last year, I was starting dialysis.
This year, I’m 9 weeks post kidney transplant from a living donor.
Somewhere in between, my perspective on life completely changed.
I’ve learned that the smallest moments are actually the biggest ones, sunsets, coffee, rain on my skin, hugs from people I love, laughter, back porch talks, ordinary days.
I’m just really thankful to be here to experience any of it at all. 🫶🏼
Here’s to another year of life, healing, gratitude, and not taking a single moment for granted.
