Recently, many people have been discussing a story involving a pregnancy that was terminated after a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome.
As an organization that serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities every day, we know these conversations are deeply personal and often filled with grief, fear, uncertainty, and love. We recognize that no one fully understands the weight of those decisions except the families living them.
At the same time, we feel compelled to say something that is equally important:
The lives of people with Down syndrome matter.
Every day at Sammy's Place, we have the privilege of knowing individuals with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities not as diagnoses, but as people. They are sons and daughters, friends and neighbors, artists, workers, advocates, and community members. They bring joy, humor, resilience, honesty, and love into the lives of those around them.
Supporting a child—or an adult—with a disability can be challenging. Families often navigate complex systems, caregiving responsibilities, financial pressures, and an uncertain future. Those realities deserve acknowledgment and support.
But challenges do not diminish a person's worth.
A diagnosis does not determine the value of a life.
Our hope is for a world where families facing these diagnoses receive accurate information, meaningful support, and a community that welcomes people of all abilities. A world where every person is recognized for their humanity, dignity, and potential.
Today, we honor and celebrate the individuals with Down syndrome who enrich our community every day. We are better because they are here.
