From Melissa husband post
Melissa may get on here later but I wanted to let you all know to be praying. Mike and Melissa have spoke with the medical staff and she has been delivered last rites. It is now just a short time before she leaves for awhile to be with her mother and other loved ones to help Jesus prepare us a place. If you know Sondra then you know it’s going to look damned good and be stacked to the nines. She always wants the absolute best for those she loves.

When I started this FB journey of giving updates on my Mom. I honestly had ulterior motives. A friend got sick with Covid several months ago and I was like a sponge wanting to know how she was doing and figuratively being right there with her through progress and regressions when she would make her posts. For those of you that don’t know who I am talking about, she had victory over this awful disease. 🙌🏻
I set out to do a few things. Obviously, Inform how my mother and family were doing. We actually lost more extended family on the Schenker side, but I just couldn’t discuss that at the time. I also wanted to Educate about this disease and plead for everyone to follow CDC protocols and protect themselves before getting sick. But lastly, I was so sure that my Mom was going to get through this and this “update/diary” of such was going to show the great things that God can do and bring people closer to Him. 😇 Even though I didn’t get the outcome that I wanted, I sincerely hope that I was able to accomplish all of my “goals”. For God has a plan for my mother and I just don’t know what it is yet or understand it.
For those of you that don’t know, my daughters are adopted and I have always read them the story of the 3 Trees. I have always told them how I wanted to carry a baby in my belly and just like in the story of the 3 trees, God had different plans. It didn’t mean that his outcome wasn’t just as wonderful, it just wasn’t what I had planned. I hope I can hold that ultimate comfort today. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I did call earlier to check on my Mom and she was still the same basically and the nurse stated that they were just trying to keep her comfortable. The plan is that we will visit with Mom, then meet with the doctor and we will not prolong her suffering.

Wednesday morning update: I spoke with Emma, same nurse from a couple of weeks ago. Emma said, “She is not doing too well, I can’t get her to open her eyes or follow commands.” But this is not her doing worse, just different from when Emma saw her a few weeks ago and was following commands for her. Emma thinks that Mom possibly has anoxic memory from Covid, but said that Mom would have to have an MRI to determine that diagnosis. I looked this up and it is caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain. Emma said that she hopes the neurologist can see her today and get an MRI ordered. Mom is still at 70% oxygen and is stable. Blood work from early this morning is all good. Hemoglobin is 9.4, kidneys are stable, electrolytes are good, and blood gas is good. Emma stated that she wanted to try and get my Mom off the sedation. Emma said, “she is honestly not on that much Presedex, so would like to see how she does without it.”
I will see my Mom this evening, but probably won’t be able to give an update until I can get home. Thanks for the continued prayers and positive thoughts! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Sunday evening update: I spoke with Verda, Mom’s nurse. Mom is still doing okay. Hemoglobin is 7.7, so it is borderline. Verda stated they are watching because if it gets to 7 or lower Mom will need a blood infusion. The Presedex seems to be working better than the other sedation they had her on, so hopefully they can slowly work on waking her up. Mom is still on 75% oxygen on the conventional setting. Mom’s blood sugar was 153 and they would like it to be under 150, so they just gave her 2 units of insulin.
Verda has been my Mom’s nurse the last 4 nights and she told me that she thought this morning before she left that it looked like my Mom was actually looking at her face and trying to make that connection. I felt like that was positive. I told Verda that when I was visiting Mom earlier that she was doing what I call “the jump scare.” When I was a kid and my Mom would fall asleep, I might try to sneak the remote from her. Typically, I would get just close enough and I would accidentally startle her awake. I felt like Mom was doing that a lot when I first showed up for the visit today and then would fall right back to sleep. Verda laughed and said that she has done that a lot for her too, and said that Mom actually scared her once doing the jump scare. 😊
All in all, things are good! 🙏🏻Thanks be to God!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I want everyone to be aware that I am expecting the doctor to discuss either tomorrow or the next few days doing a tracheotomy on Mom. This is okay and I am prepared for this outcome. On Tuesday, Mom will have been on the ventilator for 2 weeks. A person can only be on a ventilator without a tracheotomy for two weeks or so without the tube breaking down or having other issues. I have been informed that this can be reversed or it might be permanent. Although, this is not the favorable outcome, we are preparing ourselves and just want her healed and back at home.

Sunday morning update:

Still continuing to make progress. Oxygen vent is down to 75%. Her temperature is 97.5. Kidneys have improved with creatinine level at 1.19 overnight. White blood cell count is down so antibiotic must be working. She was a little agitated overnight so they had to increase sedation. I will be there at 11am to visit her. Please continue with prayers and positive thoughts.

After my visit on Saturday: 💃🏻 Woo-Hoo! We are making some Progress! Or at least I am taking it as progress! Mom is currently on 80% oxygen on the ventilator, so she is down 20% and her levels were 95-97 when I was there. Blood pressure is good and has not needed any Levafed since yesterday. Her blood pressure gets low because of the sedation. She was running a fever of 102 this morning, but when I left it was 100.7. However, they had done blood cultures and it came back that one of the places in her PICC line in infected. One of the antibiotics that she is on should take care of the bacteria that the culture produced. 🙏🏻If not, then they will have to remove the PICC line. Kidneys were functioning better after having more fluids.
Mom was asleep and eyes mostly closed throughout my visit, but I read all the comments from friends and family. I had Mike, LaShay, and Kevin speak to her on the phone. I rubbed essential oils on feet and palms.
I will be back tomorrow and Mike will be visiting during the week so I can hopefully be working.
Thanks again for the prayers and positive thoughts! 😍 They are working, keep them up!
