Did you know we have a Pediatric Dermatologist here at HCD? In addition to her adult patients, Dr. Brown sees patients from newborns through teens, treating conditions such as birthmarks, genetic disorders, eczema, & more. Because doctor visits can sometimes feel intimidating for kids, we’ve added little pops of fun to help make the experience less scary - including toys & books in a kid-friendly exam room. 🫶

From the most common plaque psoriasis to rarer forms like erythrodermic psoriasis, each type looks, feels, & behaves different. Here are 5 types that we see in clinic (although there are more subtypes!)
🔹 Plaque
🔹 Inverse
🔹 Guttate
🔹 Pustular
🔹 Erythrodermic

No two cases of psoriasis are the same - this is why it’s important to get a proper diagnosis to ensure you are getting the treatment you need. 💙

Here's what you'll ALWAYS find in our beach bag:

🧴 Broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+, we like mineral formulations)
💋 SPF lip balm
🕶️ UV-blocking sunglasses
👒 A wide-brimmed hat
💧 A reusable water bottle
🏖️ A beach towel
📖 A good book

Remember:
☀️ Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before heading outdoors.
🔄 Reapply every 2 hours - and after swimming or sweating.
👕 Sun protection isn't just sunscreen! Hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing all help reduce UV exposure and reduce skin cancer risk.

Did you know that it's estimated that 1 in 3 Texas residents will be diagnosed with a Basal Cell Carcinoma? ☀

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer, and years of intense Texas UV exposure put many people at increased risk. But there is good news - BCC is usually slow-growing and highly treatable when caught early.

Things to keep an eye out for:
• A pearly or shiny bump
• A sore that won't heal and/or bleeds
• A pink, scaly patch

While BCC rarely spreads to other parts of the body, it will continue to grow and damage nearby skin if left untreated.

In Texas, sun protection matters year-round, not just at the beach. 🤠 Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+, look for shady areas when possible, and schedule regular skin checks, especially if you've had significant sun exposure or a history of skin cancer.

Early detection makes treatment simpler and can prevent more extensive surgery later on.

Does washing your hair every day cause hair loss? 🤔🧴🚿

It’s a common misconception that daily hair washing leads to hair loss - but that’s not true!

Some people naturally produce more oil on their scalp and may need to wash their hair every day to keep their scalp clean and comfortable. Daily washing does not damage hair follicles or cause permanent hair loss.

Those strands you notice in the shower or on your hairbrush? They were already detached from the follicle and were simply ready to shed. Washing your hair just helps remove those hairs that were already in the shedding phase.

The right washing routine depends on your scalp, hair type, and individual needs - and for many people, that may mean washing daily!
