What Does a SAPR Victim Advocate Do?

Victim Advocates are a critical resource available to eligible Service Members, dependents, and civilian employees who have experienced sexual assault.

From the initial meeting and throughout the healing journey, your Victim Advocate is there to listen, support, empower, and help you understand your options.

Victim Advocates are available 24/7 to provide confidential support, information, resources, and assistance navigating available services. At your request, an Advocate may also accompany you to medical appointments, investigative interviews, legal proceedings, and other resource appointments.

Victim Advocates do not provide mental health or clinical counseling, medical care, financial services, or legal advice. Instead, consistent with the Department of War (DoW) No Wrong Door/Warm Hand-Off approach, your Advocate can help connect you directly with appropriate military and community resources.

Victims of sexual assault are at a greater likelihood to experience substance misuse in their lifetime. All it may take is one active bystander, one wingman or one battle buddy to make a difference and get them to support who can help.

Every step counts. Every action matters. Be the active bystander.

What is No Wrong Door?

DoW’s “No Wrong Door” means a survivor does not have to figure out the military support system alone.

Whichever helping office they approach should welcome them and help connect them with the right support.

The person receiving the request should:

➡️ Listen and address immediate safety needs.

➡️ Provide help within their role.

➡️ Make a “warm handoff” when another office is needed—personally connecting the survivor by phone, virtually, or in person while protecting their privacy.
