Some Ideas to Embrace Winter

* Buy yourself the sweet treat that you always want but often deny yourself. Eat it slowly and with When Harry Met Sally level gusto.
* Find a local nature center and go on a guided night hike or owl prowl
* Bring muffins or soup to a neighbor or friend (or to a local senior center or nursing home) and chill with no agenda
* Journal about your relationship with the moon, winter, and darkness:
* What does your quietest inner voice have to say?
* What would the moon say if it spoke to you? What teachings would it impart? What does being soft and subtle mean?
* Are you afraid of the metaphorical dark? What would your life be like if you could befriend darkness?
* Those of us with a significant amount of fire in our constitution (I’m looking at you pittas!), benefit from moon-gazing with a beloved

My solstice wish for you: may you give yourself the gift that you most need right now.

For the month of December, I’m giving myself the gift of rest. I’m a focused and driven person so giving myself permission to rest as much and as often as I want is a big deal. I’ve also given myself a deliberate pause from social media and screens in general.

But I wanted to pop in and share how it’s going.

The increased rest has allowed me to heal physically on a deeper level. I was already feeling fantastic compared to three years ago. And I stepped out for a hike a few days ago and my body felt viscerally strong and alive in a way that it hasn’t in over 15 years.

I’m having daily epiphanies about myself. Some are uncomfortable and have required me to make adjustments. I wasn’t aware of holding onto petty grievances but, sure enough, they bubbled to the surface. So I’m letting go of a lot and forgiving myself along the way.

Resting has turned on a fountain of creativity and inspiration. I have so many ideas! Stay tuned . . .

I’m giving myself the gift of rest and rest is giving me an increased sense of vibrant aliveness.

Sometimes, I find saying ‘no’ to be hard. The people pleasing, martyr aspect of myself wants to say ‘yes’ to everything that everyone asks of me and have limitless patience for all sort of BS. But that’s not authentic nor is it loving, especially to myself. My habit of overfunctioning allows others to underfunction. This quote has been my mantra as I shift into more equilibrium in my relationships.

Do you have a quote, affirmation or mantra that’s helped you break an unhelpful habit?

For the 20 years that I’ve lived in Connecticut (10 of those in Lyme), no one has told me what to do when I get bitten by a tick (other than remove the tick). It seems like no one knows that there are ways to make it less likely to contract Lyme or the coinfections. But there are.

So I’m sharing (with his permission) what Stephen Harrod Buhner, renowned herbalist, teacher and author of Healing Lyme recommends.

This is what I do for myself, my family, friends, and dogs when we get bitten by ticks.

1. Remove the tick as close to the head as possible—needle-nose tweezers and a magnifying glass work best for me

2. Save the tick. Resist the urge to smash or crush or stick the tick to tape (which is what I have done in the past 🤦‍♀️) Place it in a shatterproof container with a lid or a sealed plastic bag. More on this later.

3. Wash the bite site with non-toxic soap and water

4. Place several drops of Andrographis tincture on the bite site

5. Moisten a small amount (

I share all the strategies I've tried and tested to keep myself, my loved ones, my home and yard tick-free in Lyme, Connecticut.
