❓Today's question: What if I cry in therapy? ❓

One of our therapists, Jenna Pepple, LMSW, breaks it down:

"Crying in therapy is common... and it doesn't mean you're 'too emotional' or doing it wrong. It usually means you've hit something real. For many people, therapy is the first place they slow down enough to actually feel instead of holding it together for everyone else.

We're not uncomfortable with tears. We don't see crying as something to stop or fix. We see it as information. Your body and emotions are finally getting space to show up. Sometimes it's sadness, sometimes relief, sometimes frustration, sometimes from finally being understood. All of it is valid.

You don't need to apologize, explain it away, or 'pull yourself together.' A good therapist meets you right where you are and helps you feel safe while it's happening. And if you don't cry? That's okay too. There's no right way to do therapy. If tears show up, you're being human—and you're probably doing meaningful work."
