Arplo Connecting everyone to healthcare

“How do I know if I’m getting better?”

After experiencing a hemorrhagic stroke, Harry had to relearn everyday functions and adapt to significant physical changes. When he continued to experience weakness, he returned to the emergency room because he could not tell whether it was connected to his previous stroke or whether something new was happening.

That question led to a larger conversation with Dr. Victor Sonaike about how patients and providers understand and measure changes in function over time. It also became an important part of the story behind Arplo.

Through it all, Harry kept going.

“Most people give up. I kept on going.”

Have you wondered where the name Arplo came from?

While walking along the Riverwalk in downtown New Orleans, Bryan Soulie asks Dr. Victor Sonaike to share the story behind the name.

The founders wanted something distinctive and memorable, but also a name that reflected calm, peace and reassurance. That idea led them to the harp and to Harpa, an early Medieval Latin word associated with it.

The name also carries a personal connection. Victor’s daughter and his cofounder’s daughter are both named Harper, making it feel as though the name was meant to be.

Harp music, family connections and the city of New Orleans all came together to inspire the name Arplo.

Range of motion is important, but it does not tell the whole story.

Meet Bryan Soulie, PT, Arplo’s Director of Rehabilitation. With 34 years of clinical experience, Bryan has seen firsthand how challenging it can be to collect accurate and consistent objective movement information.

Traditional measurements often depend on precise positioning, alignment and the technique of the person performing the assessment. Even when range of motion is measured correctly, it is only one part of understanding a patient’s overall functional improvement.

What if movement could be measured more objectively and monitored meaningfully over time?

Range of motion is important, but it does not tell the whole story.

After 34 years of clinical practice, physical therapist and Arplo Director of Rehabilitation Bryan Soulie understands the challenges of collecting accurate, objective movement information.

Traditional measurements can depend heavily on positioning, alignment and the technique of the person performing the assessment. This can make it difficult to achieve consistency between different providers.

The goal is not simply to collect a range of motion measurement. It is to understand what that measurement means as part of a patient’s overall functional improvement.

What if movement could be measured more objectively, consistently and meaningfully over time?

In this video, Dr. Victor Sonaike shares how Arplo got started and the powerful idea behind it.

After years of treating stroke patients, one man kept returning to the hospital with the same residual weakness. When asked why he kept coming back, he simply replied: “How do I know if I’m getting better?”

That single question revealed a major gap in medicine — the inability to clearly measure and track neurologic function in a way that helps both clinicians and patients. What began as a moment of frustration became the foundation of Arplo: a platform designed to quantify human function and make it useful for real clinical decision-making.
