Before You Master Your Mind, You Must Catch The Little Bastard Running The Controls.
I Have A Dangerous Question:
Who is Actually Running Your Mind?
You May Assume The Answer is “Me.”
Excellent. Now Prove It.
Because your Mind has a Fascinating Habit of Generating Thoughts, Emotions, Assumptions, Memories, Fears, Fantasies, Arguments, Imaginary Conversations, and Completely Unnecessary Courtroom Trials at 2:17 in The Morning.
And Then it has The Audacity to Say:
“Yep. This is You.”
The Sacred Clown walks into the Circus, Looks at the ENTIRE Operation, and Asks:
“Who gave these Clowns Access to the Control Room?”
That Question is the Beginning of Consciousness.
THE FIRST LAW: YOU ARE NOT EVERY THOUGHT YOU HAVE
A Thought can Appear Without being True.
A Feeling can Appear Without Being an Instruction.
An Impulse can Appear Without Requiring Action.
A Memory can Appear Without Describing the Present.
The First Movement Toward Mastery is Learning to Observe Before Obeying.
You don't have to Destroy The Thought.
You don't have to Fight The Thought.
You don't even have to Agree with the Thought.
Just Notice It.
“I'm Having The Thought that…”
That tiny Sentence Creates Psychological Distance Between The Observer and the Mental Event.
The Thought Says:
“Everybody is Judging me.”
The Jester Says:
“Interesting. Do we have Evidence, or did the Brain just Launch Another Episode of CSI: Absolutely Nothing?”
That Is Awareness.
For One Day, Become The World's Most Curious Detective.
Don't try to Become Enlightened.
Don't Levitate.
Don't start Speaking Sanskrit to YOUR Toaster.
Just Observe.
Whenever You Notice A Thought, Give it a Simple Label:
PLANNING
REMEMBERING
JUDGING
WORRYING
COMPARING
REHEARSING
FANTASIZING
CRITICIZING
PROBLEM-SOLVING
Then Return Your Attention to what is Actually Happening.
No Argument.
No Wrestling Match.
Observation.
The Next Time Somebody Irritates You, do not Immediately React.
Pause.
Ask:
“What Happened?”
Then Ask:
“What did I tell myself about what Happened?”
Those are not Necessarily the same thing.
Somebody doesn't respond to your message.
Fact: They didn't Respond.
Story: “They're Disrespecting me.”
Additional Story: “They've always been like this.”
Expanded Cinematic Universe:
“Nobody Respects Me and Civilization is Collapsing."
The Brain can Turn One Unanswered Text into a Three Act Shakespearean Tragedy. Your Job is to Notice The Escalation.
Whenever You Catch Yourself Becoming Reactive:
STOP.
BREATHE.
NOTICE.
NAME.
CHOOSE.
Say Internally:
“This is a Thought."
or
“This is an Emotion.”
Then Ask:
“What Action serves me best right now?”
That is The Difference between Reaction and Response.
Don't Believe Everything your Mind says just because it said it in your Voice.
Your Mind is a Magnificent Prediction Machine.
It is also Occasionally an Overpaid Intern with Access to the Emergency Alarm.
Respect It.
Question it.
Train It.
Do Not Automatically Obey it.
Sometimes Consciousness Begins with Something Brutally Ordinary:
“Apparently, I argue with people who aren't even in the room.”
Excellent.
You Found The Clown.
That is Where Mastery Begins.
