If you’re dealing with gastroparesis, the first step is to educate yourself about the condition. People with often have a tough time living due to severe symptoms like , , and frequent ER visits. But there are effective treatments available!
Talk to your doctor and find a gatroparesis specialist in your area. There aren’t many dedicated gastroparesis specialists, but there might be specialists outside your area. For example, at University Medical Center New Orleans LSU Department of Surgery we treat patients with gastroparesis.

Implantation of a gastric stimulator ( ) is generally used in patients with and primarily to treat symptoms like and . Most common types of gastroparesis are , idiopathic (unknown reasons). This device can also be used in patients with gastroparesis, nausea and vomiting after certain surgeries.
The surgery is minimally invasive (robotic) and hospital stay is overnight in most patients. This is a video of the procedure.

Have you heard about of the ? Achalasia is a rare disease (1:100.000)it is characterized by the failure of relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), accompanied by a loss of peristalsis in the distal esophagus. Treatment of achalasia is aimed at decreasing the resting pressure in the LES to allow passage of ingested material. Achalasia can be treated with pneumatic dilatation (balloon), botulinum toxin injection, endoscopic (aka ) or surgical myotomy ( ). Laparoscopic Heller myotomy is the most commonly performed surgical myotomy procedure. At LSU Department of Surgery we perform this procedure using . Robotic Heller myotomy has shown to have less complications (ie intraoperative perforations). We also perform endoscopic myotomy aka POEM procedure. We will discuss the POEM in the next post...⏳
