Yes, really!

Vogue recently featured airway-focused dentistry in an article discussing the growing awareness around breathing, sleep, jaw development, and overall health — a conversation that’s been building in this space for years.
More providers and patients are beginning to recognize that issues like snoring, mouth breathing, grinding, fatigue, and TMJ symptoms rarely exist in isolation.

Airway-focused care isn’t about trends. It’s about taking a more comprehensive look at how breathing, sleep, growth, and function all work together. The conversation around airway and sleep health is getting bigger — and honestly, that’s a good thing for patients, families, and providers alike.

Dental professionals: have you noticed more conversations around airway-focused care lately?

But there’s actually some science behind it.

Late-night scrolling exposes your brain to blue light, which can suppress melatonin — the hormone that helps regulate your sleep cycle. At the same time, social media keeps your brain in a constant state of stimulation, making it harder to wind down and transition into restful sleep.

So even if you’re “tired,” your brain isn’t getting the signal to fully power down.

That combination can delay sleep onset, reduce sleep quality, and leave you feeling less rested the next day.

That said — if you’re putting the phone down, getting enough hours, and still waking up tired… it may be more than just your nighttime routine.

Sleep quality is about more than how long you’re in bed. It’s about what’s happening while you’re asleep.

Most children today have underdeveloped faces. This is a multifactorial problem, due to soft tissue dysfunction, underdevelopment of the craniofacial respiratory complex, and epigenetic factors, such as the food we eat and the air we breathe.

That combination of factors determines the need and timing for expansion.

A palate expander is a tool we use to gently widen the upper jaw, which can create more space for proper breathing. For some children, especially those with sleep-breathing concerns, it can play an important role in a larger treatment plan.

When we have a diagnosed sleep breathing disorder, 3-dimensional development is typically indicated to more profoundly change the airway dysfunction.

Children are still growing, which gives us an opportunity to guide development rather than work around it later. The earlier we can identify an issue, the more options we typically have — and the more predictable those outcomes can be.

It starts with understanding how your child is breathing, sleeping, and developing. From there, we can determine if expansion makes sense, when to introduce it, and how it fits into the bigger picture.

If you’ve been wondering whether this might be part of your child’s care, it’s a great question to ask. Drop it below or bring it with you to your next visit — we’re always happy to walk you through it.

Looking for ways to support better sleep? Let’s talk about what’s on your plate.

Certain foods can help support sleep by contributing to serotonin and melatonin production — both of which play a role in regulating your sleep cycle.

Foods rich in tryptophan, an amino acid involved in this process, can help promote more restful sleep when included as part of a balanced diet. Some great options to incorporate include salmon, turkey, eggs, nuts and seeds, tofu, and olive oil.

Salmon, for example, is not only rich in omega-3 fatty acids but also contains tryptophan, making it a strong addition to a sleep-supportive routine.

That said, while nutrition can support sleep quality, it doesn’t address the root cause of sleep apnea. If breathing is being disrupted during sleep, the body isn’t getting the rest it needs — regardless of diet.
If you’re experiencing symptoms like snoring, gasping, or daytime fatigue, it may be time to look deeper at what’s actually happening during sleep.

Understanding the “why” behind your symptoms is what leads to meaningful, lasting improvement.

Stop doing these 3 things if you have TMD or TMJ disorder!

Things like resting your teeth together, chewing gum, or leaning on your jaw can put extra strain on already sensitive muscles and joints.
They’re not the cause of TMJ or TMD — but they can definitely keep symptoms from improving.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s awareness.

Noticing what your jaw is doing throughout the day and making small adjustments can help reduce unnecessary tension and support better function over time.

Be honest — which one do you do the most?

And if things aren’t improving, it may be time to take a closer look at what’s really going on.

Is your child constantly on the go, struggling to focus, or seeming more hyper than usual? They could be suffering from an undiagnosed sleep-related breathing disorder.

For adults, sleep apnea often shows up as daytime fatigue.
For kids, it can look completely different — hyperactivity, difficulty focusing, and impulsive behavior.

Some of these signs overlap with ADHD, which can lead to missed or delayed recognition of what may actually be happening during sleep.
This doesn’t mean every child with ADHD has sleep apnea. But when symptoms like snoring, teeth grinding, restless sleep, or daytime behavior concerns are present together, it’s worth paying attention.
Sleep apnea disrupts breathing during the night, which means the body never fully rests. Over time, that can impact learning, behavior, and overall development.

Understanding how sleep and behavior are connected can help guide the next steps and ensure nothing important is being overlooked.

Hey, fellow dental practitioners!

Here's the scene:
Jaw pain gets treated with a mouthguard.
Snoring gets ignored.
Headaches get managed with medication.
And while those approaches may help temporarily, they don’t explain why it’s happening.

TMJ and sleep-related breathing issues are rarely isolated. They involve the jaw, muscles, airway, and sleep patterns working together.
When one piece is missed, the cycle continues.

If you’ve been treating the same symptoms without lasting change, it may be time to take a more comprehensive look at what’s really going on.
