Hello! I’m a medical student and I share my experiences volunteering abroad on this page. I signed up with FIMRC (Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children) to visit Nicaragua during Thanksgiving week of 2012 to help in the community clinic, Las Salinas Health Post. The program required a donation which was dis
tributed towards supporting the project's multiple sites, stocking pharmaceuticals and supplies as well as ensuring the clinic is operating successfully. While there, I helped with administering vaccinations and assisting in the preventative community outreach towards children and their families. I successfully raised a little over my goal of $1700 and was able to physically extend my helping hand in the community. The extra funds I received went towards donations in which the clinics have expressed need of, such as Children's Ibuprofen, Children's Multivitamins, Pre-Natal Vitamins, coloring books and the list goes on. How my peers help and show support?

The experience was an eye-opener, and I am genuinely thankful to everyone who donated and supported my efforts to be a service in the Nicaraguan community. I can honestly say I developed knowledge which will help me with my future patients. I hope to visit the site in Nicaragua again in the future and maybe you can too! In June 2016, I traveled with FIMRC to Huancayo, Peru through the Summer International Health Fellowship Program. I was incredibly involved in coordinating and delivering Spanish health lessons as well as planning and planting organic gardens in the rural city of Aco. Our goal was to help teach the families to grow more nutritious options to help decrease the onset of diabetes and anemia in the community. I also observed surgeries in the operating room in Hospital Carrion and minimally assisted if the doctors needed me to tie their robes. The surgeons were very welcoming and invited me to either stand next to them or behind them on a step ladder to observe their surgeries up close! I look forward to sharing more of my activities with you and once again, I appreciate all of your past support and being part of my adventure.
