As we reflect on another year at ArborVitae, we’re honored to share a few words from a member of the Class of 2026. 🌀

“Attending ArborVitae has been one of the greatest gifts.

I came to learn herbalism and left with something much larger; a different way of being in relationship with the living world. The program teaches you to see the intelligence of plants, to observe deeply, and to meet both people and landscapes with curiosity and empathy.

It feels like being entrusted with some of the Earth’s oldest secrets.

The knowledge is abundant and life changing, but more than that, it leaves you with a sense of wonder and a life that feels infinitely more rich, connected, and bountiful.”

What does the first year of herbalism study look like? 🌿

An invitation to begin.

To learn the language of the plants.

To make medicine by hand.

To study the body, the land, and the relationships that connect them.

Throughout the seasons, students build a foundation in traditional herbalism through botany, anatomy & physiology, nutrition, herbal therapeutics, and direct experience with medicinal plants.

Along the way, students cultivate something harder to name but equally important: the skills of observation, attentiveness, and relationship.

Little by little, the plants become familiar. The seasons become teachers. And a new way of seeing begins to take root.

Applications for our 2026–27 Herbalism Program are still being accepted on a rolling basis while space remains available and as openings arise. 🌿

Each year, we have the privilege of welcoming a new group of students into a rich journey of plant medicine, clinical practice, and community care. Our goal is to help students build confidence in working with herbs while deepening their connection to the wisdom traditions that inform our teachings.

A glimpse into our first-year curriculum:

🌼 Rooted in Traditional Western Herbalism, Vitalism, Ayurveda, and Traditional Chinese Medicine

🌼 Over 343 hours of instruction each year

🌼 A hybrid learning model combining in-person and live online classes

🌼 Outdoor learning experiences throughout the Hudson Valley, culminating in a camping weekend shared with students from all three years

🌼 By the end of the first year, students can expect to develop a solid foundation in herbal medicine and practical applications for supporting friends, family, and community

We are so excited to meet the next cohort of students and continue cultivating skilled, compassionate herbal practitioners.

So inspired and filled with gratitude as we celebrate Arborvitae’s Class of 2026 - our newest Clinical Herbalists! 🦋

Over the past three years, this remarkable group has moved through the program with intention, care, curiosity, and presence. They have deepened their relationship with the plants, with healing, and with themselves, and it has been an honor to witness their growth.

This past weekend’s graduation feels bittersweet. While we will miss learning alongside them, we are so excited to see where their paths lead next and all the ways they will share their gifts with their communities.

Congratulations, Class of 2026. We are proud of you and grateful for the journey we’ve shared. 🌿✨

Still swooning over our annual May Weekend at Gatherwild ✨

Every year feels so special in its own way. Bringing together all three years of students, alongside our beloved teachers and team, is hard to put into words - but it means everything to us. This camping weekend is a beautiful culmination of the wisdom, connection, growth, and transformation that unfolds both within and beyond our program.

Endlessly grateful for all that ArborVitae is, and all it continues to become 🌿

People often come to ArborVitae because they want to learn about plants and herbal medicine — but somewhere along the way, the experience grows into something much bigger. What begins as a curiosity about healing plants often becomes a deeper journey into relationship, community, and self-understanding. Franscis reflected on that experience beautifully:

“It’s hard to speak about ArborVitae without sounding cliché (but a wise teacher taught me that it is important to sometimes say what is obvious), and it is clear that ArborVitae changed my life. We sometimes joke that the herbs are a gateway drug — my initial curiosity in how the plants around me could support my body and mind opened me up to a deeper and more profound curiosity in what it means to be a living being in relationship with this living world, and helped me feel empowered in how I want to show up and who I want to show up as.

Claudia, Richard, and Sam are brilliant and humble teachers, each offering their unique medicine, and the type of human beings who I dreamed existed but had never seen embodied before. I will never stop singing each of their praises and the praises of ArborVitae — the home that holds it all.”
— Franscis Balken, Graduating Class of 2024
