Terrell Owens' grandmother, Alice Black, raised him through a difficult childhood in Alabama.

She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's the year he was drafted into the NFL, and Owens has said she never got to see him reach his greatest accomplishments.

Owens has been an Alzheimer's Association Champion since 2003, speaking out against the misconception in the Black community that the disease is "just old age" rather than one that requires proper medical care.

Louise Penny, bestselling author of the Chief Inspector Gamache mystery series, became a caregiver to her husband, Michael Whitehead, the former head of hematology at Montreal Children's Hospital, after he was diagnosed with dementia.

Penny served as a spokeswoman for the Federation of Quebec Alzheimer Societies during Alzheimer's Awareness Month, after she and Michael made the deliberate choice to speak publicly about his diagnosis, saying they had nothing to be ashamed of.

A new study from NYU Langone and Johns Hopkins just recalculated dementia risk in America, and the number is bigger than we thought. Not because more people are getting sick. Because we're finally documenting it accurately.

The finding: 1 in 2 Americans will face dementia risk after age 55, and that risk climbs past 50 percent by age 75. For decades, dementia was undercounted because it wasn't consistently logged in medical records or death certificates. A 30+ year study tracking nearly 16,000 Americans finally closed that gap.

Women face a higher lifetime risk than men, largely because women live longer on average. Genetics matter too, but so do things we can influence: blood pressure, diabetes, diet, exercise, and hearing health. Hearing loss is linked to faster cognitive decline, yet only a third of Americans with hearing loss use hearing aids.
