This month, we celebrate Bellevue nurses during National Nurses Week and honor a nursing legacy that began in 1873 with the opening of the nation’s first nursing school at Bellevue. This issue shares stories that reflect the compassion, leadership, and dedication Bellevue nurses bring to their patients and community every day.

We also recognize Bellevue’s celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The event featured a panel discussion moderated by Bellevue CEO Dr. Eric Wei with Council Member Linda Lee, Deputy Chief Nursing Officer Marie Estelle Lejarde, and Chief of Adult Psychiatry Dr. Bipin Subedi. Council Member Virginia Maloney delivered welcoming remarks, and audiences were delighted by cultural performances throughout the celebration.

This issue also features key milestones across Bellevue, including the opening of NYC’s first outpatient therapeutic housing unit at Bellevue, our Trauma Center recertification, and an inspiring trauma survivor story focused on recovery and advocacy.

Big news for Bellevue Hospital!

NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue has been re-certified as a Level I Adult Trauma Center and a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons.

As the only hospital in Manhattan south of 68th Street with this dual designation, Bellevue continues to deliver the highest level of trauma care to patients of all ages—24/7.

What does this mean?
✔️ Level I Adult Trauma Center: The highest level of trauma care, equipped to treat the most severe and complex injuries at all times while leading research, training, and regional emergency preparedness.
✔️ Level II Pediatric Trauma Center: Specialized, multidisciplinary care for children, with dedicated teams and services tailored to the unique needs of young patients.

This milestone reflects the incredible expertise, compassion, and commitment of Bellevue’s trauma teams, who provide lifesaving care to New Yorkers every single day.
